Position Summary:
The Brakeperson/Conductor works as a member of the train crew that assists with switching, splitting and moving rail cars within multiple rail yards in Windsor and Essex County, in a union environment. This position is considered safety-critical and requires the candidate to be highly vigilant about the safety of themselves and everyone around them, both in rail yards and the community. Must be available for shift work, including weekends and holidays, as well as being prepared for unscheduled shifts. Working outdoors in all weather conditions is required.
Duties & Responsibilities:
· Work on and around moving trains within rail yards and on community accessible rail track.
· Ability to move on and off stationary or moving equipment.
· Coordinate the movement and switching of railcars, including coupling and uncoupling.
· Ability to observe, interpret and relay signals to crew members for movement of the engine or train using radio equipment, specific signals or other indications to suggest when to start, stop, back-up and set or release air brakes.
· Provide flag protection and relay signals to trains in emergency situations.
· Prepare and complete reports/forms for proper reporting in a clear and legible manner.
· Carry out specific instructions for safe movement and routes of trains.
· Maintain a thorough knowledge of the CROR rules and regulations.
· Must become first aid and CPR trained and certified to be able to apply should there be emergency situations (job-provided training)
Requirements & Qualifications:
· Must be at least 18 years old.
· High school diploma or equivalent is required.
· Strong communication skills with good oral and written communication abilities.
· Ability to work in a safety critical manner. Excellent focus and attention to details and safety requirements.
· Must be able to perform physically demanding work including walking on uneven ground for extended distances, up to 10 kms a day.
· Physical ability to push/pull with force, climb up and down rail ladders, lift and carry up to lbs.
· Good visual acuity to see colour coordinated signage/signals.
· Ability to work in a team environment.
· Working up to 12-hour shifts on days, evenings, weekends and some holidays.
· Ability to work unscheduled shifts as per union bargaining agreement.
· Ability to report within a 2-hour call window after scheduled rest.
· Railway experience preferred – Brakeperson/Conductor/Engineer.
· Valid driver's license with a clean driving abstract.
· Must be able to work seasonally outside in all weather conditions.
· Good hearing and vision / Good hand-eye coordination and mechanical aptitude.
· Pass pre-employment medical / Criminal Background Check/ Drivers Abstract.
Working Conditions:
· Work takes place outdoors so workers will be exposed to various weather conditions.
· Work also takes place in locomotives and on/around railcars, rail tracks.
· High noise level exposure in work environment may affect hearing abilities (PPE provided). Attention must be given.
· Ability to work flexible hours for up to 12 hours a day.
· Physically demanding work. Must be able to complete all tasks as assigned including entrain and detrain locomotive frequently.
· Overtime and weekend work availability required.
· Must work using all required PPE.
· Teamwork environment.
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $22.28-$34.75 per hour
