NATURE OF SCOPE OF WORK

The Pool Attendant is primarily responsible for ensuring the safety of patrons, providing excellent customer service, and delivering high-quality instruction across a range of aquatic programs. This role also includes various support duties, such as maintaining accurate records, providing front-line customer service representative services, performing custodial tasks, and conducting routine inspections of pool equipment and the facility.

The Pool Attendant plays a key role in promoting health and safety standards and may be assigned other related duties as required to support the overall operation of the aquatic facility. Pool Attendants work flexible and varied hours to meet the requirements of the necessary service levels.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the supervision of the Aquatics Manager, Aquatics Supervisors, and Aquatic Programmer.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May provide instruction, direction, information and/or supervision of other employees and contractors as designated.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Instructs all learn to swim levels of the Lifesaving Society BC/Yukon and other programs e.g. Red Cross, as offered by the Department for which the employee is qualified to teach.
  • Ensures that candidates are instructed, evaluated, and maintains evaluation of progress for each participant in accordance with the required program standards.
  • Prepares and maintains lesson plans, in advance of the lesson set.
  • Coordinates pool space with other instructors to minimize disruption to other classes and programs.
  • Instructs the water-based fitness programs.
  • Lifeguards for various recreational swim programs and facility rentals.
  • Responsible for providing excellent communication and interpersonal skills with strong attention to detail when dealing with all age groups, ranging from preschoolers to seniors.
  • Activates emergency procedures as required and responds immediately to swimmers in distress.
  • Maintains daily checklists and documentation, recording duties and participation statistics, as required.
  • Provides break coverage for the front desk and collects user fees and admissions as needed.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the facility through routine janitorial and cleaning tasks.
  • Performs regular safety checks on all instructional and rescue equipment.
  • Opens and secures facilities by locking and unlocking doors as required for scheduled operations and events.
  • Ensures the cleanliness of the pools, storage areas, deck, viewing area and change rooms/washrooms and maintains the areas free of hazards.
  • Answers routine inquiries from the public using tact and diplomacy and monitors the facility to ensure compliance with safety rules, policies, procedures and regulations.

  • Applies first aid principles and practices of resuscitation, first aid and CPR techniques.

  • Thorough knowledge of aquatics and other programs offered by the Department.

  • Engages positively with facility and program users, actively listening to feedback and concerns, and promptly communicates relevant information to the supervisor.

  • Participates in training opportunities to continue to develop a thorough theoretical and practical knowledge of instructing (swim and fitness), lifeguarding, and general pool operations.
  • May serve on various employee committees.
  • Contributes to a positive work environment by modelling a respectful workplace, as per City policy.
  • Take reasonable care to protect the health and safety of themselves and the health and safety of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work.
  • Properly wears the protective clothing, and equipment provided and ensures that hazards are immediately reported to supervisors.
  • Complies with the City of Fort St. John's Occupational Health and Safety program, and all applicable policies and procedures.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILL

All required qualifications must be registered with the respective British Columbia organizations and maintained at a current status:

  • Minimum 16 years of age
  • Lifesaving Society BC/Yukon, Swim for Life Instructor
  • Lifesaving Society BC/Yukon, National Lifeguard Pool Option
  • Current Standard First Aid CPR Level C
  • Ability to pass and maintain Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector
  • Ability to obtain Lifesaving Society BC/Yukon Lifesaving Instructor/Examiner Certification within one year of hire
  • Ability to obtain Red Cross, Youth Leader Certification within one year of hire
  • Ability to present a neat appearance and to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
  • Ability to work as a team player within the department and overall organization.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in the interpretation and application of related regulations, policies and procedures
  • Ability to remain vigilant and focused for extended periods of time
  • Ability to complete in-house water-based fitness instructor training competency within 3 months of employment
