Children's Autism Services of Edmonton is a leading not-for-profit organization providing family-centered in-home and classroom-based services for children with autism and other developmental disorders. We are funded through various ministries, donations, and community partnerships. With approximately 280 employees and a $17 million operating budget, we are committed to delivering high-quality, innovative services while ensuring responsible financial stewardship.

The Finance Manager is a key member of the finance leadership team, playing a critical role in both strategic planning and day-to-day financial operations. Reporting to the Director of Operations, HR, and Finance, this role offers a unique balance between high-level financial oversight and hands-on execution of core accounting tasks.

The Finance Manager supports informed decision-making by providing accurate financial analysis and insights while ensuring compliance with internal policies, funding agreements, and regulatory requirements. As both a strategist and a doer, the successful candidate will not only contribute to shaping financial direction but also take direct ownership of essential accounting functions, helping to drive efficiency, accountability, and continuous improvement across the organization.

Key responsibilities are organized into six functional areas:

  • Financial Reporting & Compliance – Ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting to internal stakeholders, funders, and the Board; supporting audits; and maintaining compliance with funding agreements and accounting standards.
  • Budgeting & Financial Planning – Leading the development, monitoring, and reporting of organizational and program budgets, including Schedule B (Specialized Services) and PUF (Program Unit Funding), and contributing to long-term financial planning.
  • Accounting Operations – Managing full-cycle accounting, including accounts payable/receivable, reconciliations, and invoicing; maintaining accurate financial records; and supporting operational efficiency.
  • Internal Controls & Policy Development – Implementing and strengthening financial policies and controls to support accountability, risk management, and compliance.
  • Team Leadership & Supervision – Leading and mentoring accounting staff, promoting a high-performance and collaborative team culture.
  • Strategic & Organizational Support – Collaborating with cross-functional teams to align financial strategies with organizational goals and contributing to ongoing improvement and special projects.

This is a hands-on role requiring strong technical accounting skills, leadership experience, and an understanding of the non-profit funding environment.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and internal reports.
  • Develop budgets and financial reports for ministry funding partners; ensure compliance with all funding agreements.
  • Coordinate and support external audits.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and internal financial policies.

2. Budgeting & Financial Planning

  • Prepare and monitor organizational and program-specific budgets (e.g., PUF and Specialized Services).
  • Collaborate with program leaders to support financial decision-making.
  • Support long-term financial forecasting and planning.

3. Accounting Operations

  • Oversee full-cycle accounting, including AP, AR, and general ledger.
  • Manage reconciliations, including bank deposits and account statements.
  • Ensure timely and accurate invoicing for all services.
  • Maintain accurate and complete financial records.

4. Internal Controls & Policy Development

  • Develop and maintain financial policies and internal controls.
  • Promote best practices in financial risk management and compliance.
  • Support improvements to finance department processes.

5. Team Leadership & Supervision

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, including clerks and coordinators.
  • Promote a collaborative, accountable, and development-focused team environment.

6. Strategic & Organizational Support

  • Provide financial input into organizational initiatives and planning.
  • Support cross-functional collaboration to align financial processes with program and strategic goals.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and special projects as needed.

Qualifications:

Education & Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • CPA designation (or in final stages of completion) is strongly preferred.

Experience:

· 3–5 years of progressive financial management experience, preferably in a not-for-profit or government-funded environment.

· Experience managing and supervising accounting teams.

· Strong understanding of government funding models, especially in health, education, or social services.

· Experience with ECS (Early Childhood Services) funding is a strong asset.

Skills & Attributes:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in QuickBooks and MS Office (especially Excel)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
