Remote, Canada Reesink Canada Holdings Full time $80,000 - $120,000 per year

The Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive health and safety programs that promote a strong safety culture across multiple branches and service operations. This role provides leadership, technical expertise, and hands-on support to ensure compliance with provincial legislation, corporate standards, and industry best practices — including commercial vehicle safety and compliance programs.

The Specialist also plays a key role in embedding Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles into the company's safety approach, recognizing that people make mistakes, context drives behavior, and learning from normal work is essential to improving performance.

The ideal candidate is a proactive communicator and safety advocate who can influence safe behavior, strengthen systems, and collaborate with leaders and employees across a distributed organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Development & Implementation:

  • Design, implement, and continuously improve company-wide health and safety programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Develop training materials, safe work practices, and hazard control programs tailored to specific provincial requirements.
  • Support branch managers and supervisors in executing safety initiatives and ensuring consistent program application across all sites.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness through audits, metrics, and feedback loops.
  • Integrate HOP principles into programs and procedures to promote learning, accountability, and system resilience.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Monitor and interpret applicable OHS legislation in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario.
  • Ensure the organization meets or exceeds all regulatory and reporting requirements.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies and external auditors as required.

Commercial Vehicle Compliance:

  • Oversee and support the company's commercial vehicle safety program to ensure compliance with provincial and federal transportation regulations.
  • Conduct audits of driver logs, hours of service, and vehicle inspection compliance.
  • Provide training and guidance to operators and managers on transportation safety standards and best practices.
  • Collaborate with operations teams to promote safe driving practices and minimize vehicle-related risks.

Training & Coaching:

  • Deliver health and safety orientations, toolbox talks, and targeted training sessions.
  • Coach leaders and employees on hazard identification, risk assessment, and safe work practices.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, learning, and continuous improvement through application of HOP principles.
  • Support local safety committees and employee-led safety initiatives.

Incident Management:

  • Lead or assist in the investigation of incidents, near misses, and safety concerns.
  • Apply HOP learning reviews to identify system weaknesses rather than blame individuals.
  • Identify root causes, recommend corrective actions, and track implementation.
  • Maintain incident records and analyze trends to prevent reoccurrence.

Reporting & Continuous Improvement:

  • Track and analyze key health and safety performance indicators.
  • Provide regular reports to leadership, highlighting progress and opportunities for improvement.
  • Contribute to annual safety plans, audits, and management reviews.
  • Identify and share learnings from events, near misses, and normal work observations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety or related field.
  • CRSP, CHSC, or equivalent certification (or working toward designation) preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of progressive experience in safety management, ideally in industrial, service, or equipment-related sectors.
  • Strong knowledge of OHS legislation and transportation compliance regulations in Western and Central Canada.
  • Experience applying Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) or similar contemporary safety frameworks.
  • Excellent communication, training, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to travel regularly across multiple provinces (approximately 20–40%).
