PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Jewish Values and Traditions Program Coordinator develops, coordinates, and implements programs, Resident/Staff education, events, and holiday celebrations that promote Jewish heritage, culture, and values, meeting the needs of the Jewish community at Louis Brier Home and Hospital. Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisors and the Allied Health Manager, the Coordinator liaises and collaborates with Jewish organizations, associations, service leaders, and community members to provide culturally rich programming and education opportunities both on and off-site for residents. The Coordinator ensures successful program/education delivery by planning activities, preparing materials, setting up spaces, portering residents, and following outlined schedules. This role involves actively engaging participants, encouraging involvement, and adapting activities to meet diverse needs through a Jewish lens. The Coordinator also documents participant engagement and provides feedback to supervisors to support ongoing program improvement and effectiveness.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordination and Program Delivery
:
- Coordinating and collaborating with Jewish community members, organizations, associations, synagogues and service leaders to implement Jewish programs/outings/education/services/holidays/ events.
- Coordinating the completion of tasks prior to Jewish holidays and events.
- Attending Ritual Committee Meetings, coordinating and collaborating with members to establish holidays and event schedules.
- Coordinating with Food Services to implement special holiday/event meals (E.g. Kiddush, Passover Seder, etc.)
- Coordinating and implementing Jewish Values and Traditions programs and educational activity by preparing materials/resources, setting up activity spaces, and following protocols and established schedules in consultation with the recreation supervisors.
- Coordinating, planning and implementing activities and engaging residents and staff around the celebration of the Sabbath and Jewish holidays.
- Coordinating, planning Jewish holiday decorating.
Jewish Values and Traditions Education Delivery
:
- Coordinating, planning, and implementing Jewish customs, rituals, values and traditions education for Residents around Jewish events and holidays.
- Coordinating, planning, and implementing Jewish customs, rituals, values and traditions education for Staff around Jewish events and holidays.
Engage and Support Participants:
- Actively engaging participants in group or individual activities, encouraging inclusion, social interaction, and participation.
- Adapting activities to varying abilities and interests.
- Preparing for outings and overseeing participants' safety.
- Coordinating the portering of participants' to and from the activities with consultation of unit nurses.
- Providing direction to volunteers during activities.
Monitor and Report:
- Observing participants' responses and progress during activities and charting on participation engagement.
- Reporting concerns or significant observations (e.g., health or behavioral changes) to relevant clinical staff. Charting concerns or significant behaviours under direction of clinical staff.
Maintain Environment and Supplies:
- Ensuring work/activity areas are clean, safe, and organized.
- Cleaning equipment by adhering to health, safety, and infection control standards.
- Maintaining inventory of equipment and resources and notifying supervisors of items needing replacement or repairs.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from a recognized recreation program, plus a minimum 1 year's recent related experience preferred or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience in a long-term care setting. Understanding of aging/gerontology-based programming an asset.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written English and Hebrew.
- An understanding of Jewish culture, values and traditions.
- Ability to provide competent and culturally safety care with diverse populations.
- Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work.
- Ability to observe and recognize changes in clients.
- Ability to establish and maintain rapport in clients.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Ability to operate related equipment, including computer software programs.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
, including lifting over 5 lbs and climbing ladders. Ability to supervise volunteers as required.
