Special Olympics Alberta is committed to enriching the lives of Albertans with intellectual disabilities through sport. People with intellectual disabilities, of all ages and abilities, are given the opportunity to realize their full athletic potential through appropriate training, access to coaching and competitions, and to develop life skills, a healthy body, and self-esteem. It is a place where lifelong friends are made, and, for many athletes, provides the only opportunity to compete and travel on a provincial, national, or even international level.
We are currently seeking a Community Coordinator to join our team with the purpose of supporting Calgary and surrounding communities within Alberta. Our strategic mission is to ensure that every Albertan with an intellectual disability, regardless of their background, has access to our programming.
Primary Area of Responsibility
- Assist in establishing community sport and programs
- Assist in community program registration of athletes and volunteers
- Assist in supporting communities to attend to host competitive events
- Assist with volunteer recruitment, recognition and retention initiatives
- Assist in the development and support of fundraising initiatives at the grassroots, Provincial and National level
- Provide a physical presence and acting as an onsite ambassador at Special Olympics events.
Other Duties of Responsibility
- Frequent travel within the province to support programming in communities within Alberta
- May require overnight stays from time to time
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours, especially during events and peak seasons
Qualifications
- Post-secondary degree/ diploma in Sports Management, Recreation, Community Development, or a related field is an asset
- Ability to effectively communicate with diverse groups, including participants, parents, volunteers, and other stakeholders.
- Strong computer skills and familiarity of Microsoft Suite, including Excel, SharePoint and Teams.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills and the ability to work individually and in a team environment
- Ability to establish and maintain relationships with local sports clubs, schools, community organizations, and relevant stakeholders.
- Previous experience in community sports coordination organizing and overseeing sports events, leagues, or programs is an asset
- Valid Alberta Class 5 (or equivalent)
