Reporting to the Payroll Supervisor, the Payroll Specialist is responsible for contributing to the efficient and effective operations of the Payroll Department, through timely and accurate processing of wage payments and benefits. This is a FT position and based in **Port Alberni**.

**Areas of Responsibility**:
Payroll
- Responsible for the accurate full cycle processing of payroll, including timesheet entry and review approx. 500 employees in multiple entities.
- Communicate with supervisors and employees on issues as they arise.
- Ensure payroll is processed in compliance with applicable Collective Agreements, company policy, and legislation.
- Complete year-end reconciliations.
- Act as a resource for employees, advising the Payroll & Benefits Supervisor of pertinent changes or issues when appropriate.
- Be able to understand the Collective Agreement language.
- Process daily and full cycle hourly as well as annualized and EMBA payrolls up to true gross pay end processing with the Haggerty system.
- Assist employees directly resolving basic payroll issues such as account set-up, discrepancies in hours/pay, etc.

Record Keeping
- Maintains and updates employee information including wage increases, new employee registration, and terminations, etc.
- Prepares Records of Employment when required.
- Maintains all payroll files and ensures required documentation is received and valid.
- Provides ongoing recommendations for improvements to Corporate and Mill policies and processes to ensure both payroll and benefits programs are efficient and provide the best possible service to employees.

Education/ Technical / Experience
- Minimum 1-year experience in computerized payroll
- University Degree in Human Resources or equivalent is required.
- Solid knowledge of employment and labor standards.
- Payroll Certification (PCP) or working towards considered an asset.
- Excellent Microsoft Office skills including MS Word, MS Excel _(including ability to develop and use formula_s).
- A quick learner with the ability to prioritize tasks as they are assigned.
- Act as the main point of contact and provide excellent communication for all employee enquiries at the site.
- Possess strong payroll knowledge and have a process driven mindset.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to exercise a high level of professionalism and discretion with confidential information.
- Maintain a high level of accuracy and strong attention to detail.
- Establish and maintain supportive working relationships.
- Be flexible, confident and self-motivated.
- Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner.
