Under direct supervision, the Technician Grade 1 operates survey instruments and performs manual and semi-technical survey duties in the conduct of general land survey activities to aid in the provision of legal and geomatics services by the Branch.
Under the general supervision of a Technician 3 and/or a Geomatics Officer, the Technician Grade 2 is responsible for the conduct of general land survey and geomatics activities including operating a wide variety of survey instruments and other related equipment, reviewing legal survey plans, performing manual and semi-technical land survey duties, carrying out inspections concerning survey monument condition, providing secondary drafting services, and assisting with the maintenance of the Branch’s Survey Monument and Job Databases. Also participates in other geomatics related activities such as responding to monument location requests and meeting with representatives of various utilities whose construction activities may affect the survey monument infrastructure. The undertaking of these functions is to aid in the provision of quality legal and geomatics services by the Branch.
**As the**_Technician 1/2 - Geomatics_** you, will**:
- Operate and/or supervise junior field staff in the operation of precise survey instruments and equipment for the purpose of gathering measurements to support the legal survey and geomatics activities of the branch.
- Record and maintain survey and geomatics data and manage the Survey Infrastructure Protection Program (SIPP) to support the legal and geomatics activities of the branch.
- Assist the Technician 3 with mathematical computations for the purpose of gathering and reducing land survey measurements.
- Perform manual duties required for the location and placing of legal and control survey monuments.
- Inspect or direct subordinates in the inspection of survey equipment and vehicles as to operating condition.
- Perform elementary (Technician 1) /skilled (Technician 2) drafting work related calculations and compilation work preparing a wide variety of plans, miscellaneous sketches, maps, etc., relating to a wide variety of legal survey and geomatics activities.
- Monitor survey equipment and vehicles using reasonable precautions to ensure same are safe and operable and that no equipment is lost or stolen.
- Assemble the requisite materials and equipment for field operations in a complete and efficient manner.
- Prepare or directs subordinates to prepare the necessary equipment and materials for field operations.
- Perform other related duties consistent with this classification as may be required.
**Your education and qualifications include**:
- Diploma in Geomatics Technology from Red River College, or equivalent program of study from another educational institute preferred.
- TECHNICIAN 1: Minimum one (1) year experience related to legal surveys and/or geomatics activities.
- TECHNICIAN 2: Minimum three (3) years' experience related to legal surveys and/or geomatics activities including experience preparing field notes accurately, neatly and comprehensively.
- Ability and knowledge to operate all survey instruments and equipment related to the position.
- Ability to perform mathematical field calculations to test the accuracy of field measurements, in accordance with standard survey procedures.
- Ability to deal effectively with civic staff, management and the general public.
- Basic knowledge of the theory, principles, methods and techniques of land surveying.
- Basic knowledge of legal land descriptions.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Strong written communication skills.
