Accident & Health - Canada

About the role

This Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO), Accident and Health Canada will lead a team of 8 underwriters across Canada and reports to the Head of Accident & Health Canada. The position is located in the Canadian headquarters of Toronto, Ontario

What you need to know:

- Lead and develop a team of talented underwriters to develop their full potential. Drive a culture that promotes collaboration, diversity and inclusion.
- Set underwriting policy, including framework for local underwriting authority.
- Provide technical leadership to underwriting staff with the objective to balance profitability, retention and new business growth.
- Drive consistent underwriting best practices and guidelines and provide knowledge transfer of underwriting and pricing practices to staff. Build systemic ways to facilitate exchange of knowledge.
- Ensure the underwriting processes, including referrals, are efficient and optimized based on the skill sets through the referral chain.
- Review portfolio analysis generated by the actuarial team, provide recommendations and implement approved underwriting action plans.
- Liaise with actuarial, operations, legal, claims, distribution and other functions to ensure awareness of underwriting activities that require support and service.
- Provide leadership in the product development unit to support the development of new products and/or product enhancements as necessary.
- Ensure that compliance and audit related queries from branch, country and home office are being responded to in appropriate manner and that legal and compliance are engaged when required.
- Work closely with the Accident and Health distribution team to be a significant contributor to the achievement of new business targets.

What we’re looking for:

- Minimum of 10+ years of increasingly senior leadership experience in Accident and Health underwriting.
- CIP/FCIP, LOMA or CEBS designation and/or master’s degree in Business.
- Demonstrated experience establishing underwriting guidelines, internal memos and establishing best practices across the business.
- Strong business acumen and change management leadership skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated business plan execution and achievement of results, meeting or exceeding plans.
- Possess strong analytical, quantitative and interpersonal skills.
- Experience building strong business relationships internally and, in the market, including industry associations, working to enhance AIG’s brand and market reputation.
- Success in people leadership, management and development
- Ensure knowledge of and compliance with key regulatory, conduct and risk management responsibilities.
