Café Manager

49th Parallel is a coffee company that calls the Pacific Northwest home. We source, roast, brew, and serve coffee we believe in and our customers love. We're currently seeking experienced Managers with specialty coffee experience and a penchant for exceptional service at two of our cafés; North Vancouver and Downtown. Our cafés showcase our incredible coffee alongside a selection of fresh made doughnuts and a small savoury menu at select locations, so experience in specialty coffee and food service are both huge assets.

**THE ROLE**

The Café Manager is a member of the company’s management team responsible for managing the operational needs of their home café. The main functions of the position are leading and developing a team of café Supervisors and Baristas and effectively managing the day-to-day operations of the café in line with the company’s values.

**PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES**

This position will be responsible for the overall operations of the café and their duties will include but not be limited to:

- The daily running of the café including the ability to work every front of house position effectively.
- Organization of staff positions and responsibilities. Delegating tasks to ensure the café runs smoothly and efficiently.
- Efficiently plan for daily and weekly needs, as well as special events.
- Decision making relating to adjusting service and changing menus and implementing these changes across all staff.
- Assessing cost of goods and helping to set pricing for new menu items.
- Responsible for all hiring, disciplinary and firing decisions relating to the Front of House café team.
- Continued assessment and development of staff, to include service training and coffee specific training.
- Writing a profitable staff schedule using daily and weekly sales reports to assess labour cost and adjusting as necessary.
- Weekly and monthly inventory counts and ordering with suppliers. Assessing sales to set pars.
- Dealing with customer enquiries and complaints, following protocol for how to escalate issues beyond your remit.
- Maintaining a health and safety plan.
- Handling special orders from customers, and arranging the use of the café space for special events.

*Other duties and special projects may be assigned from time to time.

**QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS**
- Experience in specialty coffee service with significant knowledge of espresso extraction, brewed coffee methods.
- Working knowledge of manual and volumetric espresso machines, and basic maintenance.
- 2 years experience in supervisory / management positions within the hospitality and service sector, at least 1 of that in a coffee focused environment.
- Previous experience of hiring and staff development.
- Knowledge of inventory systems and assessment of them using sales reports.
- Ability to create a profitable schedule.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Intermediate knowledge of Excel.
- Deep understanding of POS systems, their functionalities and limitations.
- VERY passionate about coffee; require exceptional knowledge of equipment, extraction techniques and a demonstrably good palate.
- Exceptional knowledge of, and a desire to forge a career in, the specialty coffee industry.
