Located at the head of Lake Ontario and within the municipalities of Burlington and Hamilton, Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is the largest botanical garden in Canada and one of the nation’s earliest nature sanctuaries. RBG dedicates its expertise in horticulture, conservation, science and education to connect people, plants and place for the purpose of nurturing and preserving healthy growing life on our planet.
We are searching for enthusiastic and approachable Nature Interpreters who are passionate about connecting people with nature, horticulture, and environmental sustainability content through engaging programming. RBG nature interpreters deliver school and youth programs, and also provide programming for weekend and evening activities, and audiences from toddlers to seniors.
These are part-time casual contract positions with the number of hours based on the needs of program bookings and your availability. Shifts are available weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
**Responsibilities**
- Deliver captivating experiential environmental education and interpretive programming to a range of audiences in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings. **_Ability to deliver programming in French is a requirement for one of the positions. _**:
- Collaborate with other RBG team members to manage risk, coordinate program delivery, adhere to RBG messaging and program themes, and provide feedback to improve program design and delivery.
- Actively engage visitors during the delivery of various programs.
- Communicate promptly and clearly with other interpretive staff and administrators both in and out of program.
- Ensure proper upkeep of program materials and completion of administrative duties such as program statistics/summaries/reports, etc. as required.
**Requirements**:
- Exceptional oral and written communication and presentation skills.
- Knowledge of and demonstrated proven formal and/or informal experience delivering interpretive and/or educational programs in natural or environmental sciences, education, museum studies, science communication or horticulture sector to a variety of audiences and age groups.
- **_Preferred post-secondary degree/diploma in natural or earth sciences or other relevant field, or extensive natural history knowledge and experience. _**:
- Able to handle various live animals including (but not limited to) turtles, snakes, spiders, and insects.
- Enthusiastic, approachable, empathetic and people-oriented demeanor with a commitment to delivering a positive visitor experience.
- A Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC) is required from successful applicants, at their expense.
**Working Conditions**
- Position is mostly outdoors with some indoor work in all seasons in all types of weather. Indoor work involves ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional office equipment as found in a typical office environment.
- Must be able to walk 2-4 km over hilly, uneven terrain in all seasons and weather conditions.
- Weekday, evening, weekend and holiday shifts available.
