The Nature Trust of British Columbia (NTBC) is a leading non-profit land conservation organization dedicated to protecting the natural riches of British Columbia by securing, restoring and caring for B.C.’s ecologically significant habitats. Since 1971, The Nature Trust of BC and its partners have conserved over 180,000 acres of ecologically vulnerable wetlands, grasslands, and forests for generations to come. In order to help care for the land, NTBC and our partners fund comprehensive land management activities on conservation areas throughout the province, including the Kootenay Region.
NTBC is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated team player to join us in the Kootenay Region as a Field Operations Coordinator; this term contract ends in March 2026, with the possibility for the role to become permanent.
The Field Operations Coordinator will undertake all aspects of fieldwork associated with the management of conservation areas within the Kootenay Region. During the summer season, this role will supervise a small seasonal Conservation Field Crew; throughout the rest of the year, responsibilities of the position will vary widely, involving independent, project-based field work and a variety of office-based functions including planning, coordination, grant writing, and reporting tasks.
This is a full-time, contract position based in Cranbrook, B.C. The Field Operations Coordinator will report directly to the Senior Field Operations Coordinator but will work collaboratively with the Kootenay Conservation Land Manager and other NTBC staff located throughout the province.
**Duties & Responsibilities**:
- Supervise the summer Conservation Field Crew, including hiring, scheduling work tasks, and upholding safety and human resource legislation, standards, and policies.
- Perform property inspections on conservation lands, which may include wildlife and habitat inventory and data collection, mapping (e.g. ArcGIS Field Maps), reporting of land management opportunities and/or issues.
- Install and/or perform maintenance on trails, signs, fences, bridges, boardwalks, buildings, parking areas, nesting boxes, and other habitat structures, and generate reports based on field inspections.
- Assist with public use and access management initiatives including sign and structure installation, maintenance, repairs, inspections, and documenting future needs.
- Lead sign replacement efforts across the region, including research, writing, basic graphic design, and procurement.
- Assist with invasive species inventory and treatment, collection of spatial data via mapping platforms (e.g. Survey123, Invasives BC), and replanting and reseeding efforts.
- Implement ecological monitoring (vegetation plots, photo plots, camera trap and trail counter deployment, drone imagery, etc.).
- Assist with wildfire mitigation and recovery efforts, as needed.
- Clean-up/removal of litter and debris, which may include the use of truck, trailer, ATV and/or directing heavy equipment, where appropriate.
- Support the planning and implementation of a variety of ecosystem restoration and enhancement projects through all project phases (conceptualization/design, grant writing, sourcing contractors and materials, on-the-ground supervision, data collection, reporting, ongoing monitoring, and maintenance).
- Assist with projects and special events as required (i.e. tours, school events, conferences, workshops, webinars, etc.).
- Public education, outreach, and compliance efforts, as necessary.
- Coordinate and implement volunteer work events, as necessary.
- Operation and safe handling of various vehicles, trailers, and tools and equipment, including chainsaws, brush saws, power tools and hand tools.
- Schedule maintenance of assigned fleet vehicles.
- Responsible for the inventory, maintenance, and organization of a comprehensive tool crib.
- Conduct field work through a variety of weather and conditions.
- Represent and promote NTBC and land conservation efforts in a respectful and professional manner, including receiving and responding to public inquiries, concerns, and liability and safety issues.
- Strengthen working relationships with existing conservation partners, develop new working relationships with funders, partners, First Nations, government, stakeholders, community groups, and the public.
- Serve as the NTBC representative on the Kootenay Conservation Program Stewardship Committee.
- Complete various administrative tasks including filing, correspondence, scheduling, etc.
- Work plan tracking and documentation through annual reporting, supported by photos, videos, maps, data, etc.
**Qualifications, Experience, and Skills**:
- Post-Secondary Degree or Technical Diploma in Environmental Science/ Geography/ Resource Management/ Forestry/ Agriculture/ Parks or related discipline is an asset.
