We have an exciting opportunity for a Young Canada Works Digitization Assistant working in the Grace Schmidt Room of Local History. The position holder will upload and catalogue digital collections to be included in the Library’s local history digital platform, using archival best practices to support this work. Using the materials uploaded to and catalogued in the local history digital platform, the digitization assistant will write a blog post highlighting the newly uploaded collections on the Grace Schmidt Room blog, and prepare related content for social and digital media platforms to discuss discoveries in the collection.

The digitization assistant will also create staff manuals for the Library’s local history digital platform that outlines best practices and procedures for digital file upload, record creation and edits, and database management activities.

To be eligible for this position you must:

- be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada;
- be legally entitled to work in Canada;
- be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
- intend to return to studies after the YCW work assignment.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Reviews digitized content and files
- Updates tracking and digitization logs
- Identifies missing content and quality issues
- Uploads digital files to local history digital platform and links content to catalogue records
- Reviews and updates existing cataloguing records
- Creates new records as required
- Reviews physical media holdings and identifies duplicate media for discard
- Develops staff manuals for digital content upload, cataloguing, and record editing/updates
- Prepares a report detailing outstanding digitization and cataloguing work for target collections
- Develops content, including a blog post, for social media and digital platforms
- Follows safe work practices and procedures in support of Kitchener Public Library’s Health and Safety Policy

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Enrolment in a post-secondary degree or diploma program in archival science, archival management, libraries, information management or a related field
- Experience in archival digitization, description, physical processing and preservation an asset
- Knowledge of oral history principles and practices
- Knowledge of Waterloo Region history, development, and culture
- Experience in using InMagic database products an asset
- Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision
- Strong knowledge and practical experience in creating descriptions using the Rules of Archival Description an asset
- Knowledge of current archival principles, systems and practices and preservation
- Knowledge of digitization technologies and practices
- Strong organizational and critical-thinking skills
- Attention to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
