The Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC) is Alberta’s automotive industry regulator. AMVIC is a public agency accountable to the Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction and the Government of Alberta. AMVIC protects consumers and industry from unfair practices in the automotive business industry. Consumer protection and a fair marketplace are achieved through AMVIC-managed mandatory licensing for automotive businesses and salesperson registrations as required by the _Consumer Protection Act (CPA)_. AMVIC works to uphold industry standards through education of licensees and consumers.

We are seeking an Industry Standards Officer in the Calgary area supporting the territory from Red Deer north to south of Lethbridge, conducting inspections and educating automotive businesses. As a front-line ambassador, the Industry Standards Officer is a key point of contact with businesses, taking a proactive approach to ensure industry compliance. This includes informing and educating businesses on legislative requirements and providing advice on best in industry practices. We have a successful training plan for new team members. Established performance matrix and accountabilities are monitored and reviewed with the incumbent on a regular basis.
The position reports to the Manager of Industry Standards, the department consists of the manager, six full-time industry standards officers and one administrator. The position is home office based, with the requirement to travel to the automotive related places of business, Monday to Friday. On occasion overtime and overnight travel will be required to meet job demands with prior approval from Manager of Industry Standards.
**Responsibilities**
**Inspection Activities - Education/coaching/forensic**
- Visit automotive businesses to complete inspections.
- Educate automotive businesses about AMVIC’s expectations and legislation applicable to the automotive business.
- Promote best practices and make recommendations to remedy problematic trends.
- Examine the automotive business’s transactions and, where applicable, all related documents including bank statements, deposit books, cheque stubs, ledgers and all books of account in order to ensure completeness, disclosure and ongoing compliance with relevant legislation and regulations. Ensure the AMVIC levy is being submitted on a timely basis to AMVIC.
- Review general bank account and other related information, offers of purchase and sale, sales contracts, client ledgers, client agreements and other related documents for compliance with the CPA, TSA and related regulations.
- Examine related documents and transactions for practices such as failure to disclose prescribed information, odometer tampering, etc.
- Review all advertising both print and on-line, for violations of legislation and/or false or misleading advertising.
- Ensure sales personnel are properly registered with AMVIC and associated with the business in which they are working.
- Provide information, clarification and guidance on compliance policies and procedures in response to business or salesperson inquiries.
- Prepare written reports and letters of each inspection with copies of relevant information.
- Prepare summary of findings that are then discussed with the licensee at an arranged interview. Where necessary, provide an inspection notice detailing the violation of the legislation and/or regulations.
- Follow up previous inspections and note any deficiencies to determine if registrant is compliant.
- Lead and participate in educational presentations for various stakeholders.
- Give evidence at administrative reviews, appeals and in Court.
- Provide consultative advice within area of expertise to other AMVIC staff.
- Travel for inspections and training within assigned territory. On occasion support other areas of Alberta as requested.
**Licensing Responsibilities - Coaching/enforcement**
- Monitor industry compliance with the Terms and Conditions as set by the Director.
- Advise or conduct preliminary interviews with applicants, registrants, non-registrants and other parties as to the interpretation, requirements and responsibilities of the CPA and to discuss compliance and administrative action by the Director.
**Other Related Duties**
- Provide vision and guidance to the establishment, growth, success of the Industry Standards program.
- Provide assistance to investigators as they conduct investigations if required.
- Identify emerging issues and trends noted during inspections.
- Analyze ongoing inspection problems and develop recommendations and procedures to resolve them.
