**Research Analyst** specializing in prototype development and testing. This technical position is responsible for supporting and conducting applied research project(s) and related duties with a focus on mechanical design, additive manufacturing (3D printing in metal composites and plastics), material properties and fabrication techniques for prototyping.- Advanced additive manufacturing (3D printing) technology hub (AAMTECH) supports industry needs and student training across multiple manufacturing sectors including but not limited to advanced composites, metals, foods and bio-manufacturing. The hub provides access to specialized additive manufacturing systems, professional design and engineering services, and training for students, faculty and industry. It aims to increase the knowledge base and prototyping capabilities of students, faculty and industry partners to help industry commercialize innovative new additive manufacturing products - a must for expanding the BC economy.**Duties & Responsibilities**

**RESPONSIBILITIES***:

- Supports, as a team participant, the Dean, Director, Project Leader, or Research Associate in the technical aspects of planning, organizing and conducting applied research project(s) in the BCIT Technology Centre, within the incumbent’s field of technical expertise. Assists in ensuring that projects are conducted with the most effective use of current technology.
- Assists team leaders in developing project proposals for potential sponsors (industrial clients or granting agencies).
- When projects are established, performs hands-on technical work using appropriate fabrication and testing equipment, in laboratory, field, or other settings, as required including designing and documenting experimental test protocols to evaluate the effect of mechanical forces on print performance. Performs data analysis and design verification using FEA and bench testing. Shares responsibility for technical issues with the Project Leaders and Research faculty.
- Responsible for leading or assisting with CARI lab manufacturing equipment operation, setup, maintenance, and resource allocation.
- Provides technical supervision to other junior project staff and students as required.
- Assumes or shares responsibility for a specialty area of interest pertinent to the strategic research directions of the unit. Keeps up to date with current research in the specialty area. Assumes technical advisory roles for departmental research projects requiring this expertise.
- Maintains professional contact with others engaged in related research at the provincial, national and/or international level in order to keep abreast with technological developments and to identify new project opportunities. Maintains active membership, and where appropriate, active committee participation, in relevant professional societies. Furthers professional expertise.
- Performs general/administrative duties as required within CARI, including participating in staff meetings, committees and information sessions, providing management information, and assisting with acquisition, installation, and maintenance of equipment.
- Maintains a general knowledge of the aims and goals of BCIT, the educational programs in place, the proposed new programs, the expertise and capabilities of other faculty, staff and students, the equipment and other resources relevant to the incumbent’s field of expertise.
- Performs other related duties.

**Qualifications**

**QUALIFICATIONS***:

- A Bachelor’s Degree or Institute of Technology Diploma in an area suitable for the work to be performed (Mechanical engineering or similar technical background preferred) and 2 years minimum relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Thorough knowledge of current and emerging technologies and trends and research experience in one or more of the department’s identified strategic technologies including a deep understanding of the mechanics of 3D printing and material properties.
- Technically competent in the development and implementation of a broad base of technical solutions utilizing the most current technology including the ability to create test plans, produce documentation, and perform analysis.
- Knowledge in using three-dimensional CAD solid modeling software packages, preferably SolidWorks.
- Additive Manufacturing / 3D Printing industry experience preferred.
- All Research Analysts require: an ability to work effectively in a collegial manner within a team environment; excellent verbal and written communication skills; and compliance with institute policies regarding confidentiality and ownership of intellectual property.
