Research & Innovation is the creative scientific hub at Cosmetica whose primary activity consists of research and formulation development based on clients’ briefs and internal innovation concepts. Upon approval, the new formulations lead to manufacturing of finished products and drive revenue for the company. The complex activities within R&I are possible through the commitment and expertise of the diverse talent pool, their collaboration and continuous evolution and growth of technical capabilities. The Research and Innovation Chemist, specializing in Hot Pour, is responsible for developing new and innovative formulas and re-engineering benchmark products in this category including colour cosmetics and sunscreens, while using innovative technology and raw materials. The R&I Chemist will demonstrate strong technical knowledge of cosmetic raw materials used in Hot Pour, processing, filling and troubleshooting to achieve stable formulas with desired performance. Systematic scientific analysis and approach as well as problem-solving are expected from this role. Active participation in client’s visits, calls, huddles, and risk assessment meetings are also expected from this position, while performing various tasks within the range of responsibilities listed below.
**Key Accountabilities**:

- Development of new and innovative formulas in Hot Pour category of colour cosmetics and sunscreens (experience in other cosmetic technologies is an asset)
- Re-engineering of benchmark products in Hot Pour category of colour cosmetics and sunscreens
- Preparation and documentation of all experimental lab batches including the operating instructions and all applicable test results on the R&I electronic formula cards (Coptis) based on departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
- Perform all applicable analytical testing based on product specifications and written procedures
- Review and/or develop specifications for new products for suitability with existing manufacturing systems and feasibility of other advanced technologies
- Review and interpret analytical data related to all developed new and innovative products
- Evaluate technical issues and provide recommendations for corrective actions
- Prepare technical documentation package of approved formulas and review readiness for technology transfer to scale-up teams
- Participate in DOEs (Design of Experiments), Stability Troubleshooting and Production Support
- Interface with internal stakeholders - i.e. TRG, Quality, Production, Sales, Product Launch Management
- Participation in clients’ visits, huddles, and conference calls on new projects/product development
- Provide support and/or training and coaching to new and current R&I staff
- Maintain compliance with all health and safety standards, SOPs, GMP, GLP and regulatory requirements
- Maintain the cleanliness and sanitary conditions of laboratory equipment/instruments and working stations
- Assist in various R&I related lab work as required

**Skills, Experience and Education Required**:

- Post-secondary education (Bachelor or Master) in Science, preferably in Chemistry; Cosmetic Science education is an asset
- 3 -5 years of formulation experience in Hot Pour category
- Must have good colour matching skills
- Excellent understanding and working knowledge of analytical instruments for conducting physical/chemical testing for cosmetic products in Hot Pour category
- Good knowledge of manufacturing, quality, product evaluation and handling in a cosmetic industry and GMP / GLP environments.
- Process and detail oriented with GMP and 5S awareness
- Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills
- Good communication, organization, and computer skills
- Resourceful and solution oriented
- Must be a team player, creative, highly motivated and flexible with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
