Summary of responsibilities

The Peer Support Worker position acts as a peer to people who are engaged with Community Addiction and Mental Health Services, AccessMHA, Inpatient services, or who are accessing the Emergency Department for substance use health, mental health or concurrent disorder related reasons. Reporting to the Clinical Supervisor, Addiction and Mental Health Services, the Peer Support Worker will provide non-clinical one-to-one and group support in addition to sharing expertise derived from lived experience within the mental health and addiction system. This position uses a model of intentional peer support to engage clients, provide assistance, and mentorship through supportive listening. By sharing information and tools such as the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) this position provides the opportunity to facilitate smoother transitions between hospital and community services.

Requirements of the job
- Completion of Ontario Secondary School Diploma
- Lived experience in substance use health and mental health
- Peer mentoring skills
- Completion of a peer training and mentorship program such as the Psychiatric Survivors of Ottawa (PSO) or equivalent organization
- Training certifications in programs such as Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP), Non-violent Crisis intervention
- Excellent people, time management and organization skills
- Demonstrated regular, punctual attendance
- Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
- Functional level in both official languages (oral and written in English; oral in French) and testing completed
- Computer skills

Assets
- College-level education in Social Work/Counselling/Social Sciences
- Demonstrated knowledge of peer support and family support community resources
