Control Systems Specialist

**THE OPPORTUNITY**
**What You’ll Do**: Reporting to the GM, Manufacturing, working in cooperation with Mill Managers and with a focus on worker safety and continuous improvement, the Control Systems Specialist (CSS) is responsible for oversight of Process Control and Optimization systems. Utilizing his/her technical expertise the incumbent will assist Mill personnel with respect to maximizing process equipment efficiencies.
**Work Environment**: This role is to be performed in-person, working at multiple Sawmill locations.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Western operates eight sawmills on southern Vancouver Island. The mills manufacture various lumber products for competitive world markets and therefore the performance of each mill and the quality of its product is critical to the overall success of the organization.
- Maintain a high standard of personal safety and set a good example for the rest of the workforce.
- Assist manufacturing operations personnel with the identification of process equipment deficiencies and recommend solutions.
- Work with manufacturing operations personnel with the identification and implementation strategies to optimize process equipment.
- With the approval of the Mill Manager, perform necessary changes to achieve optimal process equipment efficiency.
- Provide instruction and assistance to manufacturing operations personnel on achieving and maintaining optimal operating conditions for process equipment.
- Stay current with sawmill process control innovations and treads and interface regularly with industry counterparts to ensure standards and best practices are adhered to.
- Other duties as assigned.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- Post -secondary degree/diploma in electrical engineering, or industrial electrician TQ with process controls and optimization training.
- 5-10 years’ experience in a wood processing/manufacturing environment and fully conversant with sawmill production systems.
- Expert knowledge of PLC Ladder Logic and extensive experience with Rockwell Automation hardware and software.
**SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND REQUIRED COMPETENCIES**
- Above average knowledge of Ethernet Networking
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven leadership skills, with a strong focus on operations and business solutions
- Able to identify key issues and creatively and strategically overcome challenges or obstacles
- Demonstrated strong analytical, problem solving and logical thinking skills;
- Demonstrated continuous improvement mindset.
