Aurora Engineering & Construction Services Ltd. has an exciting and unique opportunity for a Junior Pipeline Geohazard Specialist interested in a full-time, Calgary-based position. The successful applicant will be seconded to a major oil and gas producing company for a 12-month term. At the completion of the secondment term, the secondment may be extended, or the successful applicant may be offered a transfer to full-time regular employment with the client.

As our Junior Pipeline Geohazard Specialist, you will be a key player supporting our client’s full-scale Geohazard Management Program throughout western Canada. You will have the opportunity to work on varied projects, to develop your skills and to interact closely with our client’s highly experienced Asset Integrity, Production and Operation Engineering groups. Your role within the team will also include field inspections, monitoring and mitigations of pipeline watercourse crossings and slope stability geohazards.

**Key Duties and Accountabilities**

The successful applicant will:

- Work closely with the client’s field integrity personnel and Calgary integrity engineers to assess, plan and execute geohazard programs.
- Support Calgary engineering staff on ad hoc geohazard requests, assist with rapid responses to emerging geohazards in the field and undertake project management tasks.
- Assess geohazard inspection and monitoring results from internal staff and consultants and help to set re-inspection / monitoring intervals following the client’s Geohazard Management Program guidelines.
- Assist with scope definition of geohazard evaluation, monitoring and mitigation projects.
- Assist with the client’s “Geohazard Pending Action” log.
- Assist with geohazard engineering assessments at both desktop and field levels.
- Assist with management of the client’s flood and precipitation monitoring program.
- Work with the client’s Pipelines Group for new construction projects, including assessment of landslide susceptibility using LiDAR imagery for preliminary route selection.
- Work with the client’s Operations Team to develop risk-based integrity budgets, and to assist with management of cost and schedules related to the client’s Geohazard Management Program.
- Interface with ILI service providers to assess pipeline integrity in relation to known and emerging geotechnical threats.
- Work with multiple service providers to help assess, mitigate, and monitor geohazards.
- Liaise with geohazard consultants and other vendors (on client’s behalf) on all issues related to the client’s Geohazard Management Program.
- Provide field support as needed for geohazard issues and mitigations.
- Support the client’s Geohazard Management Program continuous improvement framework.
- Assist in preparing technical memoranda and reports.

**Other Details**
- Job location: Calgary, Alberta
- Travel throughout Western Canada (BC, AB, SK) may be required.
- Shift Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8 hours per shift, with some longer hours expected during field work and during travel from Calgary to field locations.
- This is a safety-sensitive position, requiring a safety-oriented attitude and occasional training to meet the client’s expectations.

**Qualifications**
- 2 - 4 years of pipeline geohazard management experience, with a Bachelor’s degree in Geosciences or Engineering. Relevant field experience is an asset.
- Registration or eligibility for registration with APEGA (P.Geo, P.L. (Geo), P.Eng or P.L. (Eng), E.I.T. or G.I.T).
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Legally eligible to work in Canada.

**Essential Skills**
- Experience with slope stability and watercourse pipeline crossing management and monitoring.
- Strong field experience in geohazard assessments for the pipeline industry.
- Experience in geomorphology, terrain mapping and landform interpretation.
- Experience with basic geohazard evaluation tools (e.g. LiDAR and satellite imagery, aerial photography, geological and topographical maps).
- Ability to assess geohazard inspection and monitoring results.
- Strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills, and the abilities to work independently or collaboratively as part of a geohazard management team.
- The ability to work under pressure, to prioritize time and resources effectively, and to manage deadlines.
- Project management, scheduling, budgeting and reporting.
- Working knowledge of Global Mapper and other mapping software.
- Previous experience with AutoCAD or other drafting software is considered an asset.
