Associate Counsel

**An Opportunity To Bring Your Legal Experience to CPA Ontario’s Office of the General Counsel**

CPA Ontario is currently in search of an **Associate Counsel (Regulatory)** who will be responsible for supporting the Office of the General Counsel in a variety of capacities, particularly in the areas of administrative law and litigation before the CPA Ontario Admissions and Registration Committee (ARC) as well as in the areas of corporate/commercial and governance legal advice and support, in order to protect CPA Ontario against legal risk and ensure the organization satisfies its ongoing legal and regulatory obligations.

**What You’ll Be Doing**:
**Providing legal advice to**:

- ** The Registrar** with respect to regulatory matters which includes preparing decision letters for admissions, readmissions, and written submissions in relation to member and student appeals before the CPA Ontario Admissions and Registration Committee (ARC).
- ** The Firms and Membership team** on licensee and member compliance with their ongoing professional requirements such as continuing professional development, annual dues, certificates of authorization, and on firm structure, registration, and name issues.
- ** The Student Services team** in relation to registration, reregistration, education and experience requirements, compliance with student obligations, and student compliance with the Academic Code.
- ** The CPA Ontario Foundation** through the delivery of day-to-day governance, and corporate/ commercial legal advice and support to all CPA Ontario business units.

**Representing CPA Ontario, both internally before adjudicative tribunals and externally in court** and otherwise representing the Registrar in litigation matters including good character hearings before the CPA Ontario Admissions and Registration Committee (ARC).

**Researching, analyzing, and providing advice, opinions, or memos**, in the areas of administrative, privacy, corporate/commercial, governance and human rights law on matters affecting the organization and/or its members, firms or students.

**Drafting and revising corporate policies and procedures** (Contracts Management Policy, Records Retention Policy), including participation in training business units and monitoring compliance.

**Who You Are**:
An LLB/JD and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario and licensed to practice law in Ontario.

Skilled with a minimum of 3 years’ experience providing legal advice in relation to administrative law and regulatory issues as well as 3 years of experience as a litigator at a firm or as in-house counsel, preferably at a regulatory body.

Comfortable working in a complex regulatory environment and knowledgeable in administrative Law and regulatory best practices which includes drafting, interpreting, and explaining governing regulations and policies.

Experienced at providing general corporate and commercial advice to an in-house client or similar; some experience with privacy, drafting and interpreting contracts is an asset.

Proficient at researching, providing legal advice and summarizing complex information clearly and concisely in writing and presenting complex material orally.

An excellent communicator (verbal and written), with proven interpersonal, presentation and negotiating skills combined with the ability to deal with people using tact and diplomacy.

Digitally proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MS Teams; familiarity with Salesforce is an asset
