The Speech Language Pathologist is primarily responsible to implement alternative forms of communication supports for clients with developmental disabilities through DDRC’s LINK program. The Speech Language Pathologist will play a vital role in working across DDRC teams and health professionals within an interdisciplinary team to address client needs, and aid networks in ways that encourage and promote program outcomes. The Speech Language Pathologist, reporting to the Director, Organization Effectiveness, will create client needs assessments, develop support plans, track developments, and report progress. The position will focus on bettering access to alternative communications strategies for DDRC clients to improve their quality of life and support their goals.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Provide mentoring, coaching, direction and support to DDRC staff to implement alternative communications strategies for clients with developmental disabilities- Remain current in communication strategies to support DDRC clients- Develop, implement, and assess communication support plans- Knowledge of Creating Excellence Together (CET) standards relevant to client support while ensuring Agency compliance with CET standards- Remain current in issues related to persons with developmental disabilities- Act as a liaison with external agencies regarding available training and fee for the development associated with appropriate service plan- Liaise with clients, DDRC staff, external agencies, partners and businesses while maintaining a customer service orientated environment- Completion of expressive and receptive communications assessments- Evaluate hearing and speech/language results and medical or background information to develop communication support plan strategies for clients- Implement, monitor, and evaluate effective communications plans and all related paperwork- Provide training for employees in communication theory including the use of strategies, tools, methods, and critical thinking skills regarding support to clients- Instruct clients in techniques that provide for more effective communication as outlined in the communication support plan, including sign language, lip reading, and communication devices- Teach clients to control or strengthen tongue, jaw, face muscles, and breathing mechanisms- Provide support and resources for employees, clients, and networks regarding communication strategies- Design, develop, and employ alternative diagnostic or communication devices and strategies- Support client networks to ensure consistent program delivery- Attend network meetings with other professionals who provide or assist client supports- Keep up to date on DDRC policies and procedures to ensure Agency compliance with CET standards- Perform all other duties as assigned or needed under the direction of the departmental manager or designate
**WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE**:
- Take accountability to ensure all mandatory certifications and training are kept current- A graduate degree in Speech Language Pathology- Strong knowledge and understanding of Creating Excellence Together standards and relevant legislation (FOIP & PIPA)
- Strong knowledge and understanding of Pro-lo-quo and software related to augmentative and alternative communications
- Demonstrated knowledge, experience and effectiveness in:
- o Training and mentoring staff in effective communications strategies
- o Building agreement and consensus within support networks regarding plans and their strategies
- Report writing -ability to pull together information and write a clear, understandable support plan and other reports as required
- Knowledge of Picture Exchange Communications (PEC) systems & American Sign Language (ASL)
