Reporting to the Shop Foreman and overseen by the Fleet Supervisor, this position is accountable for the inspection, maintenance, repairs and overhaul of equipment and vehicles owned, leased or rented by Rocky View County. The technician will work with other shop employees as well as collaboratively with other work areas to achieve the goals and objectives of the County's Business Plan and Budget. This position is not eligible for remote work. Hours of work are 7:00am - 3:30 pm Monday to Friday.
Core Accountabilities
- Responsible to carry out regular preventive maintenance and inspection programs on all vehicles and equipment to identify and reduce possible mechanical problems.
- Willing and able to participate in “on call” rotation.
- CVIP inspections.
- Experienced and considerable knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of various types of heavy equipment and other power driven equipment and tools.
- Ability to manage conflicting priorities; to multitask and work under pressure.
- Self-starter, punctual and able to exhibit initiative to keep productive when assignments are completed.
- Setup and overhaul of a variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Ordering parts needed to repair and maintain machines.
- Skilled in the operation of variety of tools and equipment used in the repair of heavy equipment.
- Preparing and maintaining accurate records and reports (daily maintenance records are required for all work).
- Ability to analyze and repair mechanical failures.
- Sound decision making, analytical and problem solving skills
- Attention to detail.
- Work in accordance with the requirements established by the RVC Health and Safety Program and the Alberta OHS Act, Regulation and Code.
- Take reasonable care to protect their health and safety and other persons at or in the vicinity of the worksite while they are working.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
- Ability to communicate professionally and tactfully with clients and provide honest diagnostic findings.
Emergency Vehicle Technician
- Specific training, experience and considerable knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of various types of emergency equipment and apparatus.
Position Requirements
Licensed Heavy Equipment Technician Completion of 4th year Journeyman Certificate along with a minimum three (3) years of experience working within a shop as well as in the field experience.
- Perform repairs both in shop and field as required, this may include inclement weather on a variety of light and heavy duty equipment.
- Experienced Caterpillar, Komatsu, John Deere, Hitachi, Freightliner and International trucks.
- Experience in the repair of diesel and gas powered engines.
- Knowledge of internal combustion engines, transmissions, suspensions, electrical, steering, braking, and drive systems
- Basic knowledge and ability to operate heavy equipment would be an asset.
- Willing to work overtime in instances as requested by the Supervisor.
- Exercise judgment while performing work to ensure a high quality of work is performed and potential problems are identified and repaired.
- Ability to perform both independently or as part of a team, a variety of jobs on varied equipment and vehicles as assigned.
- Perform assigned tasks with minimum supervision. When required consult with Foreman or Supervisor on repair projects.
- Upgrade skills as needed to keep current with Industry Standards.
- Perform other shop related tasks and maintain a clean and safe work area.
- Heavy lifting may be required periodically.
- Schedule and perform repairs within a reasonable or scheduled time to keep “down time” to a minimum.
- Adherence to internal policies and procedures is required.
- Operation of overhead crane.
- This is a shop environment and as such noise becomes a factor from time to time, the use of hearing protection will be required. Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved foot protection is also required.
- Possess a valid non-GDL class 5 Alberta driver’s license with a Q endorsement with mínimal infractions. A valid class 1 or 3 considered as an asset.
