IACE provides programs and services for Indigenous UVic students facilitating their successful transition through pre-arrival and arrival orientation programs and events, as well as ongoing supports throughout their academic journey. Acknowledging both local protocols and the diversity of ways of knowing and being our staff bring to the Office of Indigenous Academic and Community Engagement, we: - Honour and respect the peoples on whose territory the university stands; - Support Indigenous students, faculty and staff wellness and success in all our diversity; - Support the advancement of Indigenous academic programming; - Support communities and lead the university in enhancing engagement and relationships; and - Guide the university in processes and projects of decolonization and reconciliation. **The salary range for this position is**: - **Recruitment range: $65,860 - $72,607 starting salary** determined by the PEA Collective Agreement. - **Performance range: $85,633**salary range ceiling is available through annual performance increases. - **Indigenous Peoples** - Job Summary **Mandate**: Reporting to the Executive Director, and working with the members of Elders’ Voices, the Cultural Protocol Liaison provides advice on Coast Salish and Strait Salish protocols and cultural program support to campus partners’ planning and implementing events, feasts, ceremonies, and cultural activities. The Cultural Protocol Liaison coordinates the on-going delivery of Elders’ Voices program and service (including the development of proposals and reports) for the First Peoples House and works to enhance access to Elders services for the broader UVic community. **Objectives**: The Cultural Protocol Liaison coordinates and administers the Elders’ Voices program and supports Elder’s programming at IACE. - Builds and maintains relationships with Elders’ in Residence, representatives from First Nations, Indigenous organizations, and other partner and post-secondary organizations to support collaborative opportunities. - Works closely with the Elders’ Voices partners and external communities to ensure access to information and advice on appropriate protocols and in delivery of their responsibilities. - Working as part of the IACE team, this position ensures the sharing of relevant and timely information and engaging in informal and formal team meetings in order to contribute to coordination and team effectiveness. - Intimate knowledge of Indigenous ways of knowing and being is of critical importance. Cultural competency, including an in-depth understanding of colonization, decolonization, land issues, cultural protocols, and settler/Indigenous relationships is essential. This position must be highly knowledgeable and able to navigate in local Coast Salish Indigenous communities, including an intimate knowledge of family governance, Indigenous governance, ceremony, and community protocols. In addition, competence in working across diverse Indigenous populations and cultures is essential. This position requires local travel and may require work outside regular work hours (8:30-4:30) on evenings and weekends. - Job Requirements This position requires an undergraduate degree in a relevant field and a minimum of two years’ experience working in an Indigenous community/organization, community building and Indigenous community engagement.
