Position Overview
Working with the Planning Department and project consultant team, the Urban Planner will be responsible for a portfolio of development projects from due diligence through municipal approvals. The Urban Planner will work collaboratively with internal and external consultants to obtain development approvals in an efficient and professional manner.
Primary Responsibilities
- Liaise with project stakeholders, including Municipal Staff & Council, and community members to establish positive, constructive relationships to assist in advancing development projects.
- Oversee and/or assist project teams in the coordination, communication and negotiations with Municipal Staff through the development approvals process to obtain project objectives and deliverables in an efficient and timely manner.
- Coordination with other internal groups, such as Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Architecture, Construction, and Property Management throughout development project phases as may be required.
- Manage project schedules and provide bi-weekly updates to project stakeholders.
- Undertake planning evaluations and development feasibility analysis on new land acquisition opportunities as directed by the Manager of Planning & Strategic Initiatives.
- Attend planning/design meetings through development project phases to establish key design and project objectives, critical milestones, and design criteria.
- Identify, analyze, and track policy changes that may affect the development approval process at all government levels.
- Organize and routinely maintain land development project files. Monitor and ensure that current plans, planning documents, and schedules are available and accessible in accordance with corporate procedures.- Provide public presentations at Public Meetings, Council Meetings, and Committee Meetings as needed.- Provide regular development status reports to the Manager of Planning & Strategic Initiatives and stakeholders as needed.
- Carry out additional tasks as assigned by the Manager of Planning & Strategic Initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s and in Planning from an accredited University
- Minimum of 1 year experience in the Planning and Development Industry
- Good knowledge of land development, including residential, mixed-use, commercial, and agricultural developments
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to meet deadlines in a rapidly changing business environment
- Ability to manage projects effectively, on time and on budget
- Commitment to teamwork, personal accountability, taking initiative, leadership and integrity
- Experience with Microsoft Office 365 products required. Experience with other technology and programs considered an asset
- Class G driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle
