Position Summary:
Reporting to the General Manager, Health, Safety and Compliance, the primary responsibility is to oversee and enforce transportation safety protocols and regulatory compliance throughout both our Transportation and Agri-Services operations. Lead transportation safety training programs, driver meetings, conduct audits, and ensure that all drivers and staff adhere to industry safety standards and company policies. The role also involves investigating and addressing collisions, safety incidents, implementing corrective actions, and fostering a culture of safety awareness and continuous improvement.
Responsible for coordinating:
- Driver orientations and road evaluations.
- Direct front-line supervision and support to drivers regarding compliance with applicable safety policies and regulations.
- Remedial and/or in-cab instruction and coaching to newer and experienced drivers, as required.
- One-on-one coaching with drivers during scheduled runs, as required.
- Classroom training for driver orientations, customer requirements and National Safety Code related courses.
- Efficient inspections and ensuring the maintenance of company and customer issued equipment in accordance with transportation regulations, CTPAT/PIP, company and customer policies and procedures.
- Ride-a-longs and job site observations (JSO).
- The mentorship and training of drivers on various accounts, equipment, policies, and procedures.
- Pre and post trip inspection audits.
- Written driver evaluations.
- Accurately documenting and addressing training progress and problems.
- Safety checks on drivers and trucks to ensure they are safe and following company policies as well as Provincial and Federal regulations.
- Tracking and reporting on safety activities to improve safety within division(s).
- All on-road compliance, including eLogs, inspection reports and critical events.
- Driver drug and alcohol program.
Other responsibilities:
- This position involves field work with driver interactions and observations, site visits and risk assessments, incident, and accident investigations, conducting post collision interviews with drivers.
- Lead first response calls including the completion of accurate accident/incident summary reports and other official documentation.
- Support and enforce safe work procedures, including safety and company policies.
- Prepare monthly reporting of carrier profile results, collisions and incident results, insurance claims and other relevant activities to the General Manager, Health, Safety and Compliance, and senior management teams.
- Maintain training documentation based on regulations and company policies.
- Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures.
- Lead the accident investigation review team.
- Manage the driver discipline and remedial action.
- Responsible for the continued improvement of the safety program.
Education, Experience and / or Training Requirements:
- High school diploma.
- Minimum of 5 years of transportation safety and compliance experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of transportation safety and compliance management experience.
- ELD and hours of service experience for both Canada and US.
- Fleet driver trainer experience or Certified Driver Trainer (CDT) designation (NATMI) preferred.
- Certified Director of Safety (CDS) designation (NATMI) preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of all types of commercial vehicles.
- Knowledge of van, flatbed, reefer, tanker, and dangerous goods.
- Proficient computer skills.
