***:
Civilian Interpreters portray the role of a mid-Victorian era civilian living or working in the Halifax Citadel (usually a soldier’s wife or a civilian work person), and may also portray twentieth-century civilians and/or non-combat arms personnel (e.g., those from the CWAC or WRCNS). They work at the Halifax Citadel and on Georges Island, interpreting period rooms, conducting guided site tours, delivering interpretive programs, and participating in other interpretive scenarios and demonstrations.
**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Interprets restored period rooms, conducts guided site tours, and delivers other interpretive programs and informal interpretation.
- Participates in routine and special events inside and outside of the Halifax Citadel and Georges Island (scheduled hours for events may vary and can be set by management based on event requirements).
- Performs security functions during historic weapons demonstrations.
- Participates in the daily fatigue (cleaning) program of operational work areas, and cleans some visitor facilities at Georges Island NHS.
- Performs other duties as required.
**REQUIREMENTS**:
Education
- Successful completion of Grade 10 (or equivalent).
Experience
- Previous experience providing interpretation for the public in a cultural institution (e.g., museum or historic site) is required.
Language
- The ability to communicate fluently in English is required.
- The ability to communicate fluently in French is an asset, but not required.
Skills & Abilities
- The ability to learn historical information and present it accurately and efficiently to members of the public.
- The ability to speak and present in public, and to deliver guided site tours and other types of programming and interpretation to diverse groups of visitors.
**REQUIRED COMPETENCIES**:

**WORKING CONDITIONS**:
- Wears reproduction nineteenth
- and twentieth-century civilian clothing and military uniforms.
- Works in restored period interiors and outdoors on a rough, uneven surface in all types of weather conditions, standing for long periods of time.
- Works a variable work schedule including weekends, holidays, evenings, and/or overtime as required.
**CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT**:
- Willingness and ability to wear reproduction civilian clothing and military uniforms, and to adhere to associated personal appearance standards.
- Willingness to travel between work locations on foot and in small boats, and work in semi-isolated locations with limited infrastructure.
- Willingness and ability to obtain and maintain a Government of Canada Reliability Status security clearance.
