Career Advisor

The Career Advisor is responsible for ensuring that WBF achieves its annual employment outcomes by bringing industry into the classroom, career pathing and preparing students for the realities of a career in the construction, maintenance, transportation, or other under-represented industries.
Work Setting and Location - WBF utilizes an agile work model that involves both in person work and work from home components. On average, Career Advisors work from home approximately 80% of the time. Only Alberta residents will be considered for this position.
Key Responsibilities
Partner Relationships
- Research companies within the WBF Employer of Choice & Investment Partner network to understand the career opportunities for students and future Alumni.
- Complete ongoing research on trades and trades alike opportunities to strengthen knowledge of all industries that WBF promotes within program.
- Attend career fairs and networking events as a WBF representative.
- Elicit employer feedback to track satisfaction levels and opportunities for service enhancements.
- Maintain WBF’s database of employer contact information, profiles, hiring history and feedback.
Students and Graduates (WBF members)
- Support building long-term collaborative relationships with students and alumni; implement and utilize tools to promote continued, engagement with WBF.
- Work with students to identify career goals, capabilities, challenges, and solution strategies for successful employment.
- Track student training progress and new graduate employment; maintain employment records and reports.
- Create apprenticeship onboarding plans and outline skill acquisition goals in preparation for technical training.
- Facilitate workshops including but may not be limited to: career development; interview skills, sourcing jobs, and resume writing.
Employment Referral
- Assist students and alumni to find and assess employment opportunities, including sourcing student work experience and earned referral opportunities with Employer of Choice Partner’s.
- Provide customer service support to both employers and students throughout the employment referral process.
- Record all referrals and ensure accurate data is tracked and maintained.
Facilitation, Coaching and Mentoring
- Provide support to students throughout the referral and employment process, with focus on resume development, interview preparation, networking, and job search strategies.
- Collaborate and liaise with the Training department to facilitate student required workshops.
- Respond to emerging hiring trends and student needs with strategies that are aligned with WBF’s vision and values.
- Actively support WBF’s engagement of Indigenous women in exploring, preparing for, and successfully entering Alberta’s trades workforce.
Skills & Abilities
- Comfortable and confident communicating with a variety of people; industry leaders, trade personnel, students, and alumni.
- Team player; ability lead projects, influence without authority, and work well independently.
- Understanding of the Alberta apprenticeship process and exposure to non-traditional sectors - construction, transportation, maintenance, oil & gas, etc.
- Strong computer skills - Microsoft Office, CRM Dynamics, and other online platforms.
- Awareness of the challenges of women working in non-traditional roles; cultural, economic, and social barriers to adult learning and employment.
- Flexible; able to address concern outside of regular business hours.
- Well organized and detail oriented.
- Results driven with a predisposition for action; entrepreneurial mind set.
- Outgoing, energetic, and engaging.
- Creative yet practical problem-solver; ability to see and capitalize on opportunity.
- Alignment with WBF’s values and culture, including a commitment to continuous learning, and creating safe, inclusive workplaces with respect for all employees, applicants, students, and stakeholders.
Education & Experience
- 3-5 years related experience in career advising or trades recruiting environment.
- Demonstrated work experience in a fast-paced, changing environment.
- Demonstrated experience and comfortable delivering adult facilitation.
- Registered Professional Recruiter (RPR) or Certified Career Development Professional (CCDP) designation would be an asset.
- Experience working with indigenous women or other cultures; understanding of barriers to learning and employment.
