**JOB SUMMARY**

Niagara Region currently has openings for temporary, full-time Public Health Inspector Summer Students in our Public Health Department, Environmental Health Division.

Working with certified Public Health Inspectors, summer Public Health Inspector Students duties are as follows:
**Beach Monitoring program**:

- Collecting routine water samples for surveillance from fixed locations at public beaches that are used for bathing
- Monitoring and recording environmental factors at each beach that may contribute to beach water quality
- Analysis of the bacterial test results from the sampled beaches. Results will be discussed with a manager to determine course of action.
- Monitoring and updating the beach monitoring website site to update the public on beach postings
- Updating Local municipalities on beach posting results
- Interacting with members of the public and dealing with concerns with respect to water/beach quality, as required

**Vector Borne program**:

- Setting up of fixed mosquito traps weekly
- Taking down of mosquito traps weekly
- Efficacy monitoring of catch basin larviciding program
- Tick identification of submitted ticks
- Tick dragging for surveillance purposes in public access areas in the Region
- Interacting with members of the public and dealing with concerns with respect to vector borne disease as required

**Students in a**CIPHI-approved program** working toward their designation as a Public Health Inspector may have the opportunity to participate in other Public Health Inspection activities, such as**:

- General Food Inspections/Investigations
- Rabies/Animal Bite Investigations
- Recreational Water/Pool Inspections

**Hours of work**: All positions are scheduled 35 hours per week. Shifts vary, however, positions start as early as 7:30am and end as late as 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. When assigned to support Beach testing, students are required to work Saturdays.

**Location & Travel**: Positions require the student to work at Regional Headquarters, as well as to work throughout Niagara for field work. The positions require access to a reliable vehicle for travel to various work locations throughout the day, and a valid G2 driver's license (at a minimum). A valid and restriction-free G class driver’s license is strongly preferred.

**Physical Demands**: The positions require the ability to perform physical activities such as walking, lifting, bending, twisting, climbing, crouching, sitting/standing for long periods, etc. (degree varies depending on the position), and working in inclement weather.

**EDUCATION**
- Completion of high school, and
- Must meet **one** of the following two post-secondary education criteria:

- Preference will be given to students who have successfully completed at least 1 year of their post-secondary program

**SKILLS**
- Knowledge of investigation, interviewing and the delivery of Public Health inspection programs
- Working knowledge of Ontario Public Health Standards, Health Protection and Promotion Act and relevant legislation
- Customer service skills
- Ability to work as part of a team, as well as self-directed and/or with mínimal supervision
- Strong communication skills (oral and written)
- Strong health & safety orientation
- Ability to keep neat and accurate records (written and/or electronic)
- Data collection and data entry skills
