Overview / Responsibilities:
Wood is currently seeking a highly motived Intermediate Hazardous Materials and Industrial Hygiene Specialist for our Alberta Health, Safety and Environment group. Under the guidance of the Alberta HSE Group Lead, the Intermediate Hazardous Materials and Industrial Hygiene Specialist will be responsible for technical delivery of projects, project management, project coordination and delivery, client liaison, and supporting market development for projects related to hazardous building materials, demolition, industrial hygiene assessments, confined space assessments, environmental health and safety construction support services and various specialized services. This position should appeal to a motivated, mid to intermediate level professional looking to work in an often fast paced and dynamic environment.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Delivery of technical services as a hazardous materials and industrial hygiene specialist.
- Assess Requests for Proposals and prepare proposals.
- Manage relationships with key clients including architects, engineers, contractors, owners, and employers.
- Full cycle project management including coordination of field personnel, budget management, deliverables, client / regulatory liaison, and project closeout. Projects expected to include the following technical disciplines:
- Designated substances and hazardous buildings materials surveys.
- Mould evaluations and indoor air quality assessments.
- Asbestos abatement and mould remediation inspections.
- Confined space assessments.
- Industrial hygiene assessments (silica, noise, welding fume, lead, various airborne contaminants).
- Coordinate field and reporting programs to ensure project deliverables are met.
- Supervise or complete senior technical assignments including development of assessment and abatement programs, design specifications, and reporting.
- Complete technical review of reports.
- Prepare management plans for hazardous materials (i.e., lead, mercury, asbestos, PCBs, etc.) support demolition and construction projects including planning, design (specifications) and abatement (inspections).
- Provide training to internal and external clients.
- Provide mentorship and training to junior / intermediate staff.
- Engage with Wood’s global Asbestos Safety Board and be an active participant in Wood’s Global Technical Expert Network.
- Conduct Phase Contrast Microscopy analysis for asbestos and other fibres (training can be provided) in accordance with Wood’s quality assurance program.
- Prepare and submit high quality technical reports and technical documents.
- Stay current in area of professional practice and be recognized as a specialist internally and externally.
- Work occasional off-hour shifts as required to accommodate assessment and inspection services required as part of evening, night, and weekend work.
- Work on project sites within Alberta and occasionally out of province, at times working in conjunction with other offices.
Skills / Qualifications:
- 5 plus years of industry experience with a minimum 2 years of related hazardous materials and industrial hygiene work experience.
- Demonstrated project management or supervisory experience.
- Ability to multi-task and to adapt to shifting priorities is a must.
- Designation as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET), Professional Engineer (P.Eng), Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Registered Occupation Hygienist (ROH) / Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Registered Occupational Hygiene Technologist (ROHT) designation is highly desirable.
- Must have and maintain throughout employment a valid Class 5 driver’s license and a good driving record (driving abstract required).
- As an ongoing condition of employment, participate in criminal background checks including vulnerable sector screening and/or drug screening for site access.
- Excellent report writing skills and demonstrated word processing and computer skills.
- Experience with mobile electronic field data collection (i.e., tablets) and M.S. Office 365 tools.
- Good communication skills and attention to detail is mandatory (verbal and written).
- Must be available to work off-hours on occasion.
- Must be willing to occasionally work at heights with the use of fall arrest systems.
- Team-oriented, self-motivated and safety conscious with strong problem-solving skills.
- Business acumen is an asset.
**Physical Requirements**:
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment such as, hard hats, ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, steel-toed boots, fall protection harnesses.
- Must be fit to wear a respirator and able to work at heights and in confined spaces with appropriate training (provided by Wood).
