Faculty and staff in the Department support and foster the educational and research pursuits of undergraduate and graduate engineering students, while providing the best student experience. **Responsibilities**: The Manager will act as a point person for health and safety issues, conduct inspections to ensure safe laboratory practices are employed, and proactively address safety concerns involving undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members. The role will also be responsible for identifying opportunities for reprogramming and technological advancements, particularly in rapidly evolving fields such as electrical, computer, software, and artificial intelligence, ensuring that the laboratories remain cutting-edge and aligned with industry advancements. Additionally, the role operates and maintains specialized equipment and instrumentation, trains staff, teaching assistants, students, and other users of the facility on equipment and instrument operation, participates in the development of protocols, performs laboratory techniques, provides budget oversight, and orders materials and supplies as required. Furthermore, the role is responsible for providing leadership, supervision, and strategic direction to the technical staff within the department, ensuring the continued excellence of laboratory operations and innovation in support of ECE’s teaching and research mission. **Qualifications**: **Education**: - Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline - Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation - Training/courses/workshops in team development, leadership, strategic planning and financial management - Master’s Degree preferred - Project Management Professional (PMP) designation preferred **Experience**: - 5 years of experience and with the practical and theoretical aspects of electronics circuitry, electric machines, measurements and instrumentation - 3 years of experience managing staff and students and working with faculty and researchers in a research laboratory (academic and/or industrial) environment - Experience with quality control, procurement, health and safety and equipment repairs - Project Management experience, successfully managing large and/or multiple projects required - 8 years of experience working in an academic (or industrial) laboratory environment in the areas of electrical engineering, computer engineering, software engineering, or mechatronics engineering preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: - In-depth knowledge of research principles and techniques in their area of specialty - Knowledge of financial budgeting and principles to develop financial models, forecasts and analysis, of strategic planning processes and of Human Resources principles and practices - Project management skills to align projects with strategic goals and operational objectives, ensure team roles are clear, milestones are communicated, and deadlines are met - Familiarity with preventative maintenance techniques and practices with proficiency in operating and trouble-shooting equipment and apparatus in the laboratory - Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other relevant health and safety legislation - In-depth knowledge and demonstrated ability in equipment repairs - Strong engineering design background with knowledge of general laboratory procedures and with methods for research design, implementation, and analysis - Demonstrated ability to research/investigate issues and resolve problems - Ability to ensure expenditures and resources are within allotments, and to make appropriate modifications when required - Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users and confidence in dealing with all levels of the organization - Ability to write clear, concise and accurate procedural documentation - Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process sizeable amounts of information with high levels of accuracy - Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the University’s events and activities - Ability to provide guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received - Strong people management e
