**Main Purpose & Function**
This position is responsible for the effective operation of a large leisure style aquatic services involving multiple pools and lifeguard services for Vancouver’s beaches and waterfront operations. The Supervisor develops and recommends an annual business plan for the summer operations of beaches and outdoor pools and supervises and schedules a large group of staff engaged in the delivery of aquatic services, swim instruction, other water sports and office and cashiering tasks. As well, the position is responsible for initiating maintenance and repair of all beaches, lifeguard service equipment, and outdoor pools.
**Specific Duties & Responsibilities**
- Assigns, directs and evaluates the work of TFT and Auxiliary staff engaged in providing aquatic services, implementing aquatic programs and clerical support services at Vancouver beaches and outdoor pools.
- Hires and supervises a large number of auxiliary summer staff who provide lifeguard, cashier and office duties, ensuring that lifeguarding staff are qualified as stipulated by the B. C. Health Act.
- On the basis of the publics’ needs and aquatic facilities capabilities, and in accordance with Park Board policy, develops, schedules, and directs aquatic operations for the community; coordinates the most effective use of the facility to ensure intensive utilization and to optimize income.
- Reviews and assess the beach and outdoor pool operation at the end of each season and recommends changes in policy, services offered, equipment and facilities, implements approved policy changes.
- Inspects beaches and outdoor pools for safety and reports on and takes necessary action to correct unsafe conditions.
- Maintains control of uniforms, keys, first aid supplies, radios and other equipment used for beach and outdoor pool operations.
- In consultation with the staff, the general public, special interest groups, and the overall assessment of public needs, oversees the implementation and/or discontinuation of recreation programs and events and recommends changes in related policies, and program equipment.
- Maintains good public relations between staff and the general public and promotes cooperative relationships with organizations using Park Board facilities; interprets pool policy to all groups, as required.
- Assist in the preparation of the annual budget estimates, and in requisitioning supplies related to work performed, analyses costs and revenues, records usage statistics and similar statistics and prepares reports for review by a superior.
- Coordinates and administers a variety of courses and in-services to provide training for lifeguards.
- Coordinates and schedules ice patrols of lakes and streams on Parks Board property as required during winter months including hiring of part-time staff.

**Qualifications**
Education and Experience:
- University graduation in recreation or a related discipline and sound experience related to work in a similar facility/environment OR completion of an approved diploma course in recreation and considerable experience in aquatics and in the operation of municipal beaches and outdoor pools, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of a large leisure aquatics facility and lifeguard operations and the related regulations, by-laws, programming requirements and policies of the Park Board.
- Considerable knowledge of beach operations including the methods, practices, materials, equipment and practices used in water safety and lifesaving within the management of Vancouver’s waterfront.
- Considerable knowledge of the recreational needs and interests of the public served by a large leisure aquatics facility or aquatics training complex and of the methods of determining those needs.
- Thorough knowledge of the policies, rules and regulations of the Provincial Government, the Vancouver Park Board and the B.C. Health Act related to the operation of civic beaches and outdoor pools.
