Research Assistant, Asian Americans and Settler

Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.
**Position Overview**:
The Research Assistant will assist the Senior Research Assistant to support the research needs of this project and knowledge mobilization activities.
This research project is funded by a two-year grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The primary focus of the research is to further our understanding of:
- the role of Asian Americans in the U.S. settler colonial project in Hawai?i
- the impact of that settler colonial project on Asian American life in U.S. occupied North America and Hawai?i
- the historical relationships between Asian Americans and Kanaka Maoli (Indigenous people of Hawai?i)
- the potential for political coalition between Asian North Americans and Indigenous peoples in pursuit of decolonization
- Brief professional resume or CV
- 1-page cover letter (single-spaced) detailing your educational research experience and qualifications, any important skills and professional experience you would bring to the role, your career and academic goals, and your interest in and/or familiarity with the research topics
- University transcripts
- A short academic writing sample or excerpt (3-10 pages)
**Duties**:
- Assisting the book project by conducting literature reviews
- Identifying and gathering archival material using online databases
- Organizing, annotating, and indexing digitized archival material
- Reviewing primary/cultural sources such as TV shows, films, recordings, and/or photographs
- Working with the Senior Research Assistant to conduct visual/textual/cultural analysis
- Assisting the preparation of knowledge mobilization activities, such as panel discussions and conference presentations
**Qualifications**:
- Advanced Honours and Undergraduate History majors (Cultural Studies and other humanities disciplines will be considered; M.A. students will be considered).
- Strong academic writing skills.
- Experience conducting literature review/secondary source analysis.
- Experience with primary source analysis.
- Familiarity with Chicago citation style.
- Familiarity with Zotero.
- Familiarity with cultural/textual analysis (film, television, literature).
- Familiarity with archival research.
- Interest in a research-focused or activism-focused career related to the arts/humanities.
- Existing relationships with Asian North American, Indigenous, and/or other racialized communities.
- Familiarity with or desire to learn about the core histories and theories of settler colonialism and/or Asian North American studies in the U.S., Canadian, and/or Pacific contexts.
**Condition(s) of Employment**:
- **Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.**
The period of work will be from **December 2, 2024 - July 1, 2025 **and the estimated total hours of work will be **0-120 hours**.
