As a member of the Canadian legal team, the Legal Counsel will provide legal advice and creative legal solutions to the growing business demands of RGA and its operations in Canada.
**Responsibilities**
- Drafts and reviews various reinsurance treaties
- Performs general contract review and negotiation (e.g., confidentiality agreements, vendor service contracts, service level agreements, arrangements with third parties)
- Works with management to monitor and respond to developments in reinsurance and related regulatory proposals
- Supports Legal with the claims and underwriting units in the context of litigation (current or apprehended) concerning reinsured cases or for any other legal matter affecting the operations of these 2 units
- Provides advice with regard to the implementation and interpretation of the organization’s enterprise content management framework, data protection and other policies and compliance programs
- Performs other duties as assigned
**Requirements** Experience Requirements**
Mininum
- Licensed to practice law in Québec or Ontario
- Five (5) to eight (8) years of law practice in a law department of a corporation, law firm or governemental entity
- Knowledge of commercial laws and contract review and negotiation skills and practices
- Experience with life insurance transactions and regulations, or working knowledge of life insurance company operational infrastructure (actuarial, underwriting, claims, treaties, etc.)
- Experience in managing claim file disputes
- Experience with life reinsurance regulations and practices, or compliance issues
Preferred
- Involvement in industry working groups
**Other Requirements**:
Knowledge
- Knowledge of commercial law and business transaction documents
**Skills**:
- Bilingualism in French and English is required given the need to communicate orally and in writing with a predominantly English-speaking clientele based outside of Quebec, to draft and negotiate treaties essentially in English with this clientele, as well as to communicate with and provide legal services to the various departments throughout the RGA group of companies and entities located outside of Quebec
- Advanced oral and written communication skills
