We’re looking to hire a part-time OUTDOOR EDUCATOR to deliver to schools throughout the Hope region, as well as support some of our other educational programming areas, projects and events.
**About the organization**:
Hope Mountain Centre is a registered charity working to strengthen people’s connection with nature. Through our three main areas of operation (education, conservation and trails), we seek to improve people’s health and the health of ecosystems. HMCOL believes that creating access, and building a love and understanding of the outdoors is the best way to inspire people to become better stewards of the environment. Under our education arm, we provide outdoor education programs and events for all ages and abilities, spanning all seasons. Our programs are led by members of our internal education team including staff, volunteers and SMEs we contract to share about topics ranging from ecology and human history to backcountry skills and more.
**About the position**:
The Outdoor Educator (OE)’s key role is coordinating and delivering to Fraser-Cascade School District 78 classes from Pre K to Grade 6.
- Responsibilities (in order of required prioritization):
- With the Program Director’s assistance and supervision, the Outdoor Educator’s key responsibility is coordinating and delivering environmental education programs to all students from preschool through grade 6 in SD78 (Agassiz to Hope and Boston Bar). This includes but is not limited to scheduling, program prep, program delivery inside the classroom and mostly out in the field (local, regional and provincial parks), maintaining educational materials and equipment including the storage unit, managing content and analysis of post-program surveys and implementation of results, ensuring program content is in line with current curriculum (periodic program development with guidance from Program Director and Education Committee), tracking and reporting on program stats.
- Represent HMCOL at community events (tabling) as time permits.
- Occasional creation of web content including drafting website content, as well as periodic social media content related to environmental education.
- Attend regular meetings with the Program Director, weekly staff meetings, monthly board meetings, and annual AGM and Retreat (Strategic Planning weekend).
- If time permits, delivering fee-based environmental education programs to other groups as the opportunity arises including homeschool groups, and special interest groups including camps and private daycares.
- Assist the Program Director with public programs when necessary and as time permits.
The Employee shall perform these duties and responsibilities diligently, in accordance with the organization's policies, procedures, and expectations. HMCOL reserves the right to modify or amend the Employee's duties and responsibilities as required by the operational needs of the organization, and the Employee shall be notified in writing of any such changes. The Employee's cooperation and flexibility are essential to the successful performance of their role and contribution to the organization's objectives.
**Qualifications, skills and other requirements**:
- Biology, ecology, education, conservation and/or resource management studies diploma, degree or related and equivalent work experience. Other relevant areas of study/experience may be considered.
- Strong public speaking skills
- Comfortable working outdoors in every season and weather condition
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle with capacity to carry large educational props.
- Must have a work space at home including a computer and cell phone to work from.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Independently-driven.
- Diplomacy and professionalism
- OE must hold a current Remote/Wilderness First Aid level or above certificate, or willingness to get certified within the first year of employment and after probation period of 3 months after employment start date (paid for by HMCOL).
- Passion for environment/wildlife conservation.
**Minimum related work or experience**:
1+ years experience teaching/delivering environmental education programs.
1+ years experience teaching/working with children.
**TERMS**
The position is a remote job requiring you to work from home, as well as at various locations
throughout the Hope area for program delivery including schools, local, regional, and provincial parks, and occasionally remote backcountry.
Rate of pay is $25/hour, plus vacation pay. HMCOL will provide CPP, EI and WCB coverage.
