Building Maintenance Worker

ROLE PURPOSE
The Building Maintenance Worker will assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment in and around the supportive housing facility by performing a variety of cleaning, landscaping, and interior/exterior maintenance duties. They will work alongside other staff to assist residents with activities of daily living and the development of life skills.
STATUS AND CLASSIFICATION
Unionized / This position is open to applicants of all genders.
HOURS
**40 hours per week; Tuesday - Saturday**: 1100 - 1900
This position requires the ability to work flexible hours based on operational needs.
REPORTING AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
- Reports and is accountable to the Program Manager or their designate
- Participates actively in staff, and staff/resident meetings
- Participates as a member of the Connective staff team
- Liaises with external professionals from other agencies, contractors, and/or government agencies as required
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Custodial
- Performs routine cleaning of the building and grounds
- Assists staff with the preparation of rooms for new residents including pest control
- Cleans and disinfects building areas such as walls, windows, floors, carpets, air vents, furniture, washrooms, mattresses, and blinds
- Cleans external areas such as entrance ways, sidewalks, and parking lots to remove dirt, leaves, snow, and other refuse
- Collects and removes garbage and recyclable materials and ensures the safe disposal of hazardous materials
Building Maintenance
- Under the general guidance of the Program Manager and Property Coordinator assumes a primary or key worker role in making necessary troubleshooting and repairs and/or coordinating external contractors to perform them
- Liaises with contractors to ensure the quality and timeliness of the repairs
- Maintain safety standards are established and ensured for the building and preventative maintenance tasks are performed
- Maintains lawns and yards as per guidelines and performs minor gardening and lawn maintenance tasks including winter outdoor maintenance
- Monitors maintenance and housekeeping supplies
- Provides input to the Program Manager and/or other staff regarding the planned or emergency maintenance issues
- Assists the Property Coordinator and Program Manager in the development of annual repair schedules, budgets, and capital plans as requested
- Assists the Program Manager and/or other staff in the identification of potential problems and reports any difficulties
- Provides input to other staff, Property Coordinator, and Program Manager to address the needs of the residents
- Follows all relevant Connective policies, procedures, and guidelines
Program
- When assigned, participates in social, recreational, educational, and other programs as appropriate
- Supports the daily living of the residents with accessibility needs including cleaning of the suites, doing laundry, serving breakfast and dinner, and more tasks as required
- Assists with and/or conducts inspections of resident spaces
Other
- Participates in staff and resident/staff meetings
- Other duties may be assigned from time to time
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Function independently while on shift and adhere to Residence Policy and Procedures
- Demonstrates a level of physical fitness and emotional resilience to effectively carry out the required duties of the program and to meet the operational needs of the residence
- Often exposed to working conditions including chemicals such as paint, stains, cleaning agents, and glue when performing basic painting, plumbing, and carpentry work; requires specific safety precautions to mitigate the risk of injury
- Is available to work flexible hours which may include evenings/weekends as determined by program/resident needs and schedules
- Is a member of CUPE local 1936-11
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- Grade 10 level of education and/or equivalent with relevant related experience
- Experience in performing minor maintenance on buildings, grounds, furniture, electrical fixtures and plumbing, such as unplugging sinks and toilets, replacing tap washers, light bulbs. Preferably experience working with adults with complex behavioral and mental health challenges and/or with problematic substance use
- Experience in establishing and maintaining a collaborative and positive relationship with residents and other staff
- Ability to manage time efficiently, high level of accuracy, and attention to detail
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with contractors
- Strong communication skills (listening, verbal, and written)
**REQUIREMENTS**:
- Ability to successfully complete a Children and Vulnerable Persons Criminal Record Check
- Ability to successfully pass a reference check
- Current Emergency First Aid Certificate
