Laboratory Analyst

LAB ANALYST - MICROBIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

As an Entry Level Analyst in our Microbiology Department your main responsibilities are:

- The determination of Total Coliform, E. Coli, Fecal Coliform, Heterotrophic Plate Count and
Background Bacteria in a variety of environmental matrices including Raw and Treated Drinking Waters, Groundwaters, Surface Waters, Waste Waters, Liquid Sludges & Biosolids
- Accepting and Logging In of samples into our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
- The Preparation of the appropriate Media(s) required for the multiple forms of Bacteria listed above.
- Daily QA/QC Checks of Incubators, Refrigerators and Balances
- Disposal/Sterilization of expired samples, media etc.
- Reporting of Adverse Drinking Water Quality Results falling under the Safe Drinking Water Act of Ontario to the appropriate authorities.
- You will be exposed to all QA/QC protocols required for a fully accredited lab under ISO Guide 17025.
- The Job would be a full time, permanent position in our Microbiology Department. Due to the nature of work performed in this Department weekend shifts on a rotating basis will be required. Hours of work are relatively flexible but are typically sometime between 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Friday. Weekend Shifts are typically 9:00am to 2:00 pm on Saturday. Sunday Shifts are solely for the reading of bacteria plates if required and typically are no more than an hour in duration. Staff working on Sundays are paid for a minimum of 3 hours.
- Basic knowledge of the safe handling and preparation of media and the safe use of autoclaves is an asset.
- Our Microbiology Lab has a Risk Group 2 Pathogen and Toxin License from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
