Established in 1969, REACH is a Community Health Centre with a history of primary care
innovation. REACH is dedicated to providing high quality integrated health care in East Vancouver to
families and individuals of all ages. We focus on clients with complex social, mental or physical
needs. REACH offers a widely respected interdisciplinary approach to care within our medical, dental,
pharmacy, UPCC and multicultural family centre.
**Position Summary**
The Violence Prevention Coordinator will coordinate our “Gender Based Violence Prevention” project
intended to increase support for people who have been victims of gender-based violence. The VPC
understands the dynamics of violence, importance of community partnerships and has the skills to
support people who have been victims and the skills to coordinate projects. The project will address
gender-based violence through a diversity of methods: support groups, educational, talking circles and
one to one support. Key areas will be prevention, support, resources and education. This role reports to
the MFC Manager. This is a new role, so the VPC should be able to adapt and be flexible in taking on
new tasks, and giving input into how their role can best serve REACH’s clients and the community.
**Responsibilities**
- Provide on-site assistance to people who have been victims of violence or sexual assault, and
refer and direct them to appropriate resources.
- Provide aid in leaving abusive relationships through assistance to access transition houses and
shelters.
- Oversee and ensure the implementation of programs to address and reduce gender-based
violence through prevention, support and education.
- Develop training curricula, educational materials and tools for educational groups to assist
bolstering skills to prevent and respond to violence and harassment. Arrange facilitators of
workshops, and provide marketing and IT support for programs.
- Develop and organize support groups, talking circles and one on one support for victims of
gender-based violence.
- Work collaboratively with REACH staff to develop and provide feedback on content and
resources
- Build and maintain relationships with organizations, communities, and key stakeholders to
ensure effective planning and delivery of training.
- Report to MFC manager to ensure the program is responsive to community feedback and
accessible to all people who would access REACH.
- Maintain and report on costs and keep project within budget.
- Actively participate in Outreach Committee meetings.
Team and centre activities:
- Participates actively in staff meetings and board committees.
- Participates in the overall activities of the health centre such as in-service training, committees,
special events and shared staff responsibilities.
- Communicates clearly, listens accurately, is open to feedback, handles conflict appropriately,
and displays sensitivity to others.
- Collaborates well with others, promotes cooperation and teamwork.
- Participates in REACH’s commitment to becoming discrimination free and an inclusive health
centre and promotes a healthy lifestyle.
- Maintains the reputation and confidentiality of the health centre and its clients at all times.
- Adheres to all applicable REACH policies and procedures.
**Qualifications**
Many forms of education and lived and work experience are valued and will be equally considered,
including volunteering and lived experience of mental illness, addiction, and/or abuse;
Minimum education and experience include:
- A certificate/diploma in community social services
- One year of recent, related work experience, including working in gender-based services with an
emphasis on mental health, violence and/or social services.
- Or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training and experience.
**Skills**
- Knowledge and/or experience of the dynamics of the spectrum of violence, including domestic
violence, sexual assault and sexual harassment.
- Knowledge and skills necessary for working from a trauma-informed perspective, including an
understanding of intergenerational trauma and impacts of trauma on individuals, workplaces,
and communities.
- You are comfortable working with people who are struggling with substance use and/or mental
and spiritual wellness.
- Experience in crisis intervention and prevention.
- Able to work collaboratively with other staff, family and with external service providers.
- Sound knowledge of gender-based violence services and resources around Vancouver and able
to establish and maintain positive and collaborative relationships with agencies and resources.
- Able to identify and work to increase program participant strengths
- Able to analyze problems and develop effective solutions
- Must pass a Criminal Records Search for working with vulnerable adults and children
- Ability to speak a second language
