Career Counsellor

Reporting to the Director, Career-Integrated Learning, the Career Counsellor supports Sheridan’s diverse student population, providing career counselling services to help students explore, identify, and evaluate career goals, and make plans to achieve them throughout the student lifecycle. The Career Counsellor is an integral contributor to support career clarity, academic success, personal wellness, and designs programs, strategies, and innovative solutions linked to institutional priorities such as student retention, persistence, and career education. This role also supports the development of programs supporting graduates to careers in partnership with Academic Faculties or community partners, and to support first year students in student success and achievement.
**What You’ll Be Doing**
- Supporting students through multiple methods including individual carer counselling appointments, in-person and virtual career development workshops and webinars and larger campus wide events;
- Utilizing career counselling interventions specific to a student’s unique needs to support career decision-making managing career and personal circumstances that affect career choices throughout the student lifecycle;
- Administering and interpreting a variety of level A & B standardized career assessment inventories including the MBTI and the SII that will assist students in exploring career options and making career decisions;
- Providing counselling and in-depth career assessments (standardized and non-standardized) for students from diverse educational backgrounds while supporting students through the career development process;
- Sourcing and providing information on specific job and career paths as well as current Canadian occupational and labour market information;
- Counselling students on industry specific certifications and educational planning, including both students changing their current academic path and those exploring further education and pathways at Sheridan;
- Participating in case conferences concerning their students with other Sheridan staff (including Accessible Learning, Counselling and Wellness, Student Advisors, Faculty Program Co-ordinators, Co-op and Field Placement Advisors), and/or helping professionals within the community;
- Partnering with academic Faculties on projects related to career education, weaving employability and career education into curriculum and programming, in addition to employability skills development both in and outside of the classroom;
- Developing and facilitating career education curriculum on a variety of topics including career assessments, strengths, interests, values and personality and labour market trends both in person and virtually;
- Organizing, promoting and participating in small and large events including orientation and transition programs, educational sessions and other career related activities;
- Liaising, offering professional consultation, and participation on Sheridan committees on the topics above to Sheridan managers, faculty and staff (e.g. student retention, career clarity, persistence, career education, etc.);
- Maintaining up to date student case notes and data; creating and updating career counselling and career education materials;
- Performing other related duties, as assigned.

You demonstrate your **student/client centered** nature through the passion in your practice in **working collaboratively** with students to assist them in the achievement of personal and academic goals.
You are committed to remain current on relevant job-related matters and topics to be success in this role.
You have excellent **interpersonal, communication** and **group presentation** skills are comfortable working in a variety of settings including, individually one-on-one and in groups.
- Master’s degree in counselling psychology, psychology, career development, social work or other closely related discipline
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience counselling in an educational or community-based setting with a focus on career counselling/career education, working with a diverse range of students/clients
- Compliance with the Canadian Standards & Guidelines for Career Development Practitioners
- Solid understanding of and experience using a diverse range of career counselling theories and modalities to assess student’s career readiness and goals
- Experience with and certified to administer and interpret level A and B career assessments, including the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Strong Interest Inventory (SII)
