**STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS**:
Demonstrated knowledge, interest and successful experience or training/education in principles and practices of unionism, labour relations, adult education, WCB and Workplace Safety and Health Legislation. An ability to work with members and various other persons and groups in the interests of the Union and to achieve its objectives.

Must be able to work well in teams, understand and respect confidentiality and meet deadlines. Must be capable of effectively and efficiently managing multiple priorities, tight timelines, stressful situations and communicating complex information in a plain language format.

A positive attitude, receptivity to direction, respectful approach towards management and co-workers, maturity and a high level of self-motivation are essential. Commitment, confidentiality, organizational loyalty and professionalism are essential.

Must be able and willing to travel as necessary to provide labour relations assistance to assigned worksites throughout Manitoba. Must have a valid Manitoba Driver’s license and access to a personal automobile in good repair.

Must be willing to exercise flexibility in work hours (occasional evenings/weekends) from time to time to meet operational needs as per flexibilities/limitations outlined in the UFCW collective agreement.

Fluency, and an ability to perform labour relations functions effectively, in both official languages (English and French) is considered an asset.

Experience in labour relations in a health care setting (particularly nursing) is also considered an asset.

**DUTIES**:
Acts in the best interests of the MNU, maintaining high standards of confidentiality and modeling the practice of professional conduct. Positions in this classification are responsible for providing a wide range of general and specialized labour relations advice, guidance and services to MNU leadership, staff and members. Areas of primary focus may include: organizing, collective bargaining, education, grievance/arbitration, membership liaison, benefits, workers compensation, and occupational safety and health. Incumbents may perform a combination of one or all of the following duties and responsibilities:

- Processing and managing grievances, collecting and maintaining centralized records related to workload, employment, staffing problems and related issues;
- Provide contract interpretation to individual members and worksite leaders;
- Preparing and providing information and assistance for arbitration and Labour Board hearings;
- Collecting, maintaining and preparing reports on relevant data and ensuring records are centralized for ease of access by other staff as required;
- Participating in member education and presenting selected educational workshops; providing contract interpretation to individual members and worksite leaders and attends conferences, committee, and community events as a resource person or MNU representative as assigned;
- Supporting and/or organizing and developing new Locals/Worksites;
- Provide proposal research and generation support to collective bargaining;
- Participates in collective bargaining for selective agreements in planning, provision of essential services, preparation of proposals, handling of collective agreements (editing, printing, etc.) and acting as negotiator for same;
- Participate in ongoing evaluation of MNU collective agreements including identification of short and long term strategic risks and opportunities;
- Undertakes assigned project and committee activities;
- Serves as liaison between members, other MNU staff and consultants;
- Prepares materials for Independent Assessment Committees and/or Nursing Advisory Committees and provides assistance to members and worksites related to Occupational Health and Safety and Accommodation of injured nurses;
- As directed, assist the MNU Education Officer to plan, develop, implement, deliver, co-ordinate, manage and evaluate MNU education programs and activities;
- Provide general member/worksite advice, guidance and support;
- Provide member pension and benefit leadership, advice, guidance and support;
- Provide workplace safety and health, workers compensation, rehabilitation, disability and accommodation advice, guidance and support;
- Completes special projects and performs other related duties as may be assigned.
