Landscape Maintenance Crew Lead

We are a busy, long-running landscape maintenance company with deep roots in the Saanich Peninsula, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada and are looking to hire the right person to run one of our crews for the upcoming season (and beyond).

**Your Role**:
The role of crew lead is maybe the most important we have. You will be the main connection point between our clients and our company; between the junior staff and the managing leadership. In this role, your responsibilities will include:

- Leading a healthy, encouraging, and welcoming working environment for your crew
- Assigning tasks to your crew and supporting their learning and growth as gardeners
- Safely operating a truck and trailer, including leading weekly safety and maintenance inspections of both
- Maintaining an organized truck and trailer, and ensuring you have everything you need for your work day
- Route-planning your scheduled work week
- Getting to know your clients so we can best meet their needs
- Tracking each of your contracts across the year to ensure we're delivering service within the budgets provided
- Being prepared to make proactive recommendations to clients to keep their gardens healthy and thriving, and provide (or research) any garden advice they may seek
- Maintaining an open, collaborative mindset when working with other staff
- Balancing the needs of multiple properties to ensure that you can complete more involved maintenance tasks while still meeting the needs of other clients on the route, as well as planning ahead to ensure everything that needs doing gets done in the seasonally correct timeframe

I've seen landscapers with only one or two years of related experience ready to take on a leadership role of this kind, and I've seen landscapers with multiple years of experience struggle to manage the job. As such, you should have a minimum of two years or more of experience in commercial landscaping, a strong familiarity with the routines of this kind of company and in addition to the following skills and knowledge:

- Valid BC driver's license, Class 5. Drivers abstract or claims history on request.
- Horticulture knowledge; plant identification, strong pruning skills as well as an awareness of when different plants are best pruned, as well as an intention to expand your knowledge on a self-driven, ongoing basis. Understanding of the needs of plants, especially regarding soil, light, and water.
- Tool and machine knowledge; experienced familiarity with small gas and electric maintenance equipment such as mowers, hedge and grass trimmers, ladders, hand saws, etc. Good understanding of machines, both their safe use and responsible care, and an ability to maintain awareness to keep them running well and identify needed care or repair.
- Good vehicle awareness, with an ability to safely operate as well as maintain an awareness of vehicle conditions, in order to report anything that needs tending to.

We will train and support growth and skill-building in all of these areas, but you will need to possess a certain degree of the above and qualifications in order to be considered for the role.

**Job Types**: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $27.00-$32.00 per hour
