Temporary Full Time Summer Program Assistant

The Summer Program Assistant will help to provide support in all program areas at the Bethany Hope Centre over the summer months so that we can avoid any interruption in programs.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Creating weekly Make n Take kits for families to be sent with their food share order
Assist with the indoor garden towers and community garden, planting, weekly weeding, watering, harvesting of vegetables and herbs
Assist with any childcare for those clients who have appointments in the centre when needed
Assist the welcome centre coordinator with administrative duties such as dealing with clients, contractors, etc. who need access to the building, answering the phones, data entry, etc.
Research and create awareness around the vegetable of the month, print off ideas and recipes that include the vegetable of the month
Assist with pick up on Fridays for food share
Help to unload Ottawa food bank truck and organize food share shelves weekly
Help with creating and organizing lunch box items weekly
Will complete all mandatory health and safety training
Written and Verbal Communication
May be required to compose case notes if necessary
**WORKING CONDITIONS**:
This is a temporary position based on 30 hours per week for8 weeks
Flexibility in scheduling is required
This position requires you to be comfortable in an ever-changing environment and learn new tasks quickly
This position requires you to be on your feet approx. 75% of the time and requires both physical and mental effort
**QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS**:
In progress on a post-secondary diploma or degree in field of Social Services or related field an asset
Completion of Secondary School
This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment
Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*: and,
Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
- International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident
**EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE**:
Prior experience in community programming an asset
Experience with children and /or young parent families an asset
**SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES**:
Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
Second language spoken an asset
Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
