Fleet Safety Coordinator

Under the direction of the Director, Transit Fleet, the Safety Coordinator supports the implementation and maintenance of the Municipality’s Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) program within Transit Fleet and the management of health and safety-related services.
The Safety Coordinator assists in the development and implementation of safety-focused policies, procedures, and systems designed to prevent hazards and target safety risks. They support the creation and maintenance of a fundamental culture of safety throughout Transit Fleet and work in collaboration with Corporate Safety and all Halifax Transit divisions, advising the Director on all matters related to occupational health and safety.
The Safety Coordinator acts as a front-line resource for employees, supervisors and superintendents who identify risks in their work environment, performs site audits and workplace evaluations, and ensures that staff are proactively identifying and eliminating health and safety hazards from the workplace.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Identifies gaps in existing work methods and procedures and works with employees and management to develop solutions; develops improved work methods and procedures and submits recommendations to the Director.
- In collaboration with Corporate Safety and the Facilities Supervisors, the Safety Coordinator supports the provision and maintenance of safety-related services within the fleet maintenance garages at Burnside and Ragged Lake, and ferry maintenance as required. (e.g., First Aid Kits, Eye Wash Stations, Fire Extinguishers, AED machines, Evacuation procedures, etc.).
- Identifies actual and potential hazards, and in the workplace that could result in injury or loss of life, performs site audits and workplace inspections at all locations, and documents compliance with the Nova Scotia OH&S General Regulations.
- Participates with the Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committees and supports safety communications to employees.
- Supports projects and change management associated with corporate health and safety initiatives with the Safety Specialist for Halifax Transit.
- Ensures a consistent, high standard of documentation of maintenance safety incidents.
- Assists in the education and training of maintenance employees, supervisors, and superintendents as required, on new safety procedures, the lessons learned from health and safety investigations, and how to improve the use of the investigation and reporting tools available in the municipality.
- Performs routine site audits and workplace evaluations, and documents compliance and non-compliance with the Nova Scotia OH&S General Regulations.
- Monitors Health & Safety related KPIs and reports performance and recommendations to the Director, senior leadership team, and corporate safety as needed.
- Conducts meetings with management, employees, vendors, suppliers and internal service providers to identify opportunities for business and technological improvements related to safe-work practices.
- Provide support to ensure safety standards and practices are followed within the Ferry Maintenance Division.
- May perform other related duties as assigned.
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education and Experience**:
- Minimum five years of related health and safety experience with at least three years leading, developing, and integrating health & safety programs.
- Minimum post-secondary certificate in occupational health, safety, or a related field.
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation is an asset.
- Demonstrated experience working in a unionized organization is an asset.
**Technical / Job-Specific Knowledge and Abilities**:
- Demonstrated ability in developing and preparing correspondence and reports.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Word; Outlook; Power Point; Excel and employee health and safety online systems and workplace testing equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate understandable safety instructions and concerns to employees.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team environment with strong skills in developing and maintaining productive working relationships with managers, employees, union officials and the public.

**WORK STATUS**: Permanent, full time.
**HOURS OF WORK**: 8:30am-4:30pm Monday - Friday, 35 hours per week. May require occasional overtime based on operational requirements
**SALARY**: Non-union Level 5 ($66,830-$78,625)
