In response to the Strathcona County Social Framework and the Valuing Mental Health Report (2015: Alberta Mental Health Review Committee), the Mental Health Capacity Builder (MHCB) works with school staff, parents/caregivers, children, youth and community partners to foster skills and attitudes that support mental health as a priority and increase access to services.
At schools, MHCB works collaboratively and in partnership with school staff, parents/caregivers, and students to shape cultures that support positive mental health and healthy relationships by working alongside school staff in the development and integration of positive mental health, social emotional learning and healthy relationships into the school culture and curriculum, role modelling, coaching and mentoring. The MHCB also develops strategies for parents/caregivers to support and reinforce student learning outside the school.
The MHCB is a part of the Social Supports team and provides direct services to residents seeking to increase their access to community resources and services. As part of this team, the MHCB also works with the community to facilitate early intervention for children, youth, and parents/caregivers.
**Responsibilities**
- Build upon the strengths and capacity in school staff, parents/caregivers and community partners to support positive mental health (social skills, self-confidence, peer relationships, emotional management and personal development), social emotional learning and healthy relationships in children and youth
- Provide information, support and system navigation to a wide-range of community resources using an action-oriented strength-based approach
- Ensure quality service through regular supervision and work plan review while adhering to program standards and guidelines
- Participate with colleagues in project and committee work through research, addressing root causes and completing specific tasks related to planning, development, implementation and evaluation
**Skills and Abilities**
- Excellent working knowledge of positive mental health, social emotional development and healthy relationships
- Excellent organization, coordinate and analysis skills with the ability to multi-task and manage workload between traveling and office time
- Possess strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with a teamwork orientation
- Strong facilitator, verbal and written communication skills with an openness to others ideas
- Must be able to travel to various urban and rural locations throughout Strathcona County and surrounding area
**Qualifications**
- University Degree in Social Science with preference for those fields with regulated practice plus 3 years related experience. Required to attain and maintain appropriate registrations and certifications, if applicable
- Diploma in Social Science plus 5 years experience may be considered
- Minimum of 2 years experience using a capacity building approach to work with adults including coaching, mentoring and training
- Incident Command System training level 200 (ICS 200) is an asset
- Experience with project and committee work would be an asset
- Ability to respond in times of natural disaster
- Available to work days, evenings and weekends
**Conditions of Employment**
- Submission of satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Intervention Record Check
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's licence and submission of a 5-year Driver's Abstract with less than 7 demerits
