**About the Opportunity**:
Clinical Assistants are licensed physicians employed by Nova Scotia Health to provide medical care under the supervision of a fully licensed physician. This position is assigned to the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology. Participation in the call schedule is required. Clinical Assistants report directly to the Cardiology Clinical Assistant Program Director or designate and indirectly to the Central Zone Executive Medical Director through the Director of Medical Affairs, NSH.

**Clinical Responsibilities**

Under the supervision of an attending member of the Division of Cardiology:

- Functions as a member of the team in the Cardiology service at the level of a PGY1 or PGY2. Makes regular rounds with supervising staff.
- Liaises with nurses, housestaff, attending staff and other members of the health care team in the development of the overall patient care program.
- Communicates with patients, families, referring and family physicians concerning patient management plans.
- Performs and documents admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, death certificates, etc.
- Manages the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders on charts and responding to emergencies, in consultation with attending staff.
- Performs procedures within the scope of demonstrated competence and privileges and according to established policies or protocols. These may include: the insertion of peripheral intravenous lines, initiation of intravenous medication, taking blood samples for diagnostic purposes or arterial blood gases, insertion of Foley catheters, performing EKG’s and the removal of arterial sheaths.
- Radial artery lines will only be inserted at the request of senior resident or attending staff. This procedure will be supervised until full competency of the procedure is demonstrated.
- Arranges consultations with other departments for care and investigation.
- Follows through on investigations and arranges follow-up outpatient visits.
- Attends educational sessions and rounds as time permits.
- Interacts with and orientates clinical clerks and PGY1’s, new to the Cardiology Service.
- Participates in on-call responsibilities of the service.

**About You**:

- CMPA coverage required
- ACLS certification required
- Good command of written and spoken English
- Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills
- Completion of the equivalence of a rotating internship and postgraduate training and experience in Neurosurgery are consider assets
- Physical demand - Must be able to sit, stand, walk and perform duties as outlined above
- Mental and Visual demand - High; must be able to deal with stressful situations
- Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred

**Compensation and Incentives**:
$48.45 - $61.72 Hourly
