Reporting to the Deputy Chief of the VIA Rail Canada Police Service, the Sergeant is responsible for the supervision of Patrol Officers and the performance of administrative functions. The sergeant coordinates and delegates assignments, provides supervision on the field as well as ensures policies and procedures are respected. Sergeants also participate in activities directed at maintaining public safety. Ability to travel (5%-10%).
**Responsibilities**:
- Supervises and coaches staff by monitoring, evaluating, and providing feedback on performance to staff; promotes the personal and professional development of staff; completes the annual Performance Reviews, assists in sectional priorities, and ensures a respectful workplace. Provides supervision as required/directed to meet the continued provision of quality policing services and ensures the operational needs of the VIA Rail Canada Police Service are met;
- Monitors major calls for service and notifies Duty Officer of any incidents that may impact VIA Rail Canada Operations, and facilitates the management of resources. Assumes command and provides direction of all major events unless replaced by a senior officer. Prepares briefing notes for the Executive, ensures appropriate personnel are informed of major incidents;
- Maintains and develops partnerships with law enforcement and emergency services. Liaises regularly with government regulators, agencies and other transportation organizations and associations. Maintains open and cooperative working relationships internally and within the communities VIA serves;
- Responds to all calls for service as directed per policy and provides assistance to other officers. Responds to incidents requiring police response observed while on duty. Process arrested persons as directed by policy and supervises detainee management;
- Plans and supervises special events and enforcement programs where required;
- Conducts investigations as directed and supports other units as required, directed and/or as per policy and procedure. Investigates accidents involving a Police Service vehicle and handles public complaints according to policy.
Requirements:
- Secondary School Graduate - Grade 12 or equivalent;
- Completion of all required training for Constables at Atlantic Police Academy (APA), École national de police du Québec (ENPQ), Ontario Police College (OPC), Justice Institute of BC (JIBC), Royal Canadian Mounted Police Academy (RCMP “Depot”) or equivalent;
- Must have successfully completed basic constable training with a recognized Canadian police service (note that any Canadian Forces Military Police applicants must sworn Regular Force members who completed the Regular Force QL3; Reserve Military Police do not qualify). Salary will vary depending on experience and years of service and can exceed the current range.
- At least 5 years of law enforcement experience;
- At least 3 years of management experience;
- Experience in dealing with the needs of communities;
- Demonstrated experience in organizing, directing, and performing supervisory duties;
- Experience and the demonstrated ability in serving the public in a professional manner.
- Maintain the required training/certification required to perform the duties of the Patrol Sergeant, and any specialized training/certification as required by VIA Rail Canada to meet operational requirements;
- Supervisor Course or other leadership/management courses;
- Quebec language skills:
- French - fluency in oral, reading, and writing.
- English - Working knowledge.
- Rest of Canada language skills:
- English - fluency in oral, reading, and writing.
- French - Working knowledge.
Job Knowledge:
- The Federal and Provincial statutes and regulations required to perform duties;
- VIA Rail Police Service Policies and Procedures;
- Principles of sound supervision and management practices as well as principles of, training and performance evaluations;
- The Organization’s Mission, Vision, and Values;
- The VIA Rail Police Service Records Management System.
Hours of work:
- The position requires shift work hours (including Statutory Holidays).
