**TITLE**: TURF AND LANDSCAPE HORTICULTURIST

**QUALIFICATIONS**:
Secondary school graduation supplemented by a Landscape Horticulturist Certification or Trades Qualification and Turf Management Diploma.

Over five years of experience in the maintenance, development, and use of equipment related to grounds.

Knowledge and previous experience with commercial irrigation equipment and systems.

Have a demonstrable ability to supervise skilled and non-skilled workers.

Have the ability to work with minimum supervision.

Has a demonstratable ability to read and interpret blueprints, effectively lay out work, possesses knowledge of landscape work and possesses a general knowledge of minor repair work.

Able to communicate effectively (both orally and written), and able to develop and maintain good relationships with customers, staff, managers and other groups.

Skilled in and able to handle equipment and turf machinery.

Good health and sufficient strength to perform the tasks required.

Able to work under adverse weather conditions, interruptions and distractions.

Be licensed to drive any vehicle under their jurisdiction, a class 3.

**RESPONSIBLE TO**: Manager of Facilities or his designate.

**SUPERVISES**: Personnel as assigned by the Director of Facilities or his designate.

**JOB GOAL**: To design, develop and maintain school district landscape spaces to the level required, which includes trees, shrubs, ornamental plants and turf grass.

**PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Assumes responsibility for the design, development and maintenance of school district landscaped spaces.

Perform irrigation related duties and replace Irrigation Technician as required.

Prepares soil, plants, cultivates, prunes, and irrigates, to maintain plant vigour. Selects, handles and utilizes trees, shrubs and ornamental plants and turf grass.

Applies pesticides as necessary in accordance with Provincial regulations.

Instructs other workers on landscape and horticulture work

Recommends and purchases supplies, materials and equipment and maintains an inventory in conjunction with supervision.

Estimates projects in terms of labour and materials.

Efficiently and safely uses and maintains of all machinery, vehicles, equipment and tools utilized for landscape grounds maintenance. Drives all vehicles, operates large tractors, etc.

Examines district owned facilities on a regular basis for purposes of preventative maintenance. Recognizes and reports on degradation and problem areas.

Keeps in mind the safety of others, including school children.

Performing other related duties as assigned.

**TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT**: 12 months per year.
