Your role

Radio-Canada is looking for an Head of Journalism who will work closely with and under the supervision of the Senior Manager, News and Current Affairs. This position is based in Moncton, New Brunswick.

You must have extensive journalism experience and superior editorial judgment. You must be able to supervise the production of news content for digital, radio and tv. In-depth knowledge of all our platforms is a definite asset for this position.

You must also bring confident, positive leadership and strong interpersonal skills in order to maintain a harmonious, respectful workplace. You will be required to support teams on a daily basis, ensuring compliance with Journalistic Standards and Practices in accordance with management directions.

Key tasks:
- Communicate overall strategic objectives, as well as more specific objectives related to News and Current Affairs, editorial practices, digital platforms, impact journalism and continuous news. Develop an action plan for achieving those objectives and follow up with teams.- Constantly monitor the work of reporters and lineup editors to ensure alignment with the editorial vision.- Be the first point of contact for questions about story choices/angles, resources, field deployments, staff assignments, etc.- Support, guide, engage and motivate news teams to generate and develop relevant feature series for audiences.- Ensure optimal reach for multiplatform content.- Coach reporters on a daily basis and establish career development plans for each of them.- Attend daily story meetings.- Monitor our news production on digital, radio and television platforms with a critical eye to provide teams with feedback and ensure quality control.- Cover for the Senior Manager, News and Current Affairs, in their absence.- Participate in the performance management process for staff and suggest ways to improve performance.- Participate in the hiring process for new employees in tandem with the Senior Manager, News and Current Affairs.- Supervise new hires and interns, support the smooth operation of teams on a daily basis and ensure that technical needs are met.- Manage and approve schedules, and identify challenges in the field jointly with the Senior Manager, News and Current Affairs.- Sit on various local, regional and national committees upon request and perform any other task assigned by management.- Support the Senior Manager, News and Current Affairs, in discussions with Legal Services.- Help schedule the annual leave of news staff.

You will be required to be on call one weekend out of four and to respond to after-hours emergencies.

What you bring:
The position requires the following qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field and ten (10) years’ journalism experience- Advanced knowledge in journalism and program production-
- Excellent knowledge of the region and a strong network of contacts- Bold, agile and creative mind to develop innovative solutions, evaluate workflows and create new processes- Knowledge of effective management and change-management techniques- Leadership skills to engage and inspire creative, self-motivated teams- Proven track record in developing employees and providing constructive feedback- Ability to deal with confidential matters- Positive attitude and solutions-focused leadership
