**Position Summary**:
Under the general direction of the Deputy Fire Chief and reporting directly to the Chief Fire Prevention Officer, the Fire Prevention Officer is responsible for the safe and efficient coordination, planning and support of all department fire prevention programs and for the conducting of inspections, investigations, public fire and life safety education, airport community education programs and public relations activities. The Fire Prevention Officer’s primary responsibility will be to enforce fire prevention regulations, conduct inspections on all types of new/existing buildings and ensure conformity with applicable by-laws, codes, and regulations.

**Key Accountabilities**:

- Inspect all types of GTAA and private buildings and structures on airport properties to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations; participate in potentially difficult and contentious re-inspections. The performance of inspections can be physically demanding, and they may be conducted under adverse environmental conditions. Due to the complex operational requirement of the airport, occasionally after hour inspections and fire investigations are required
- Issue inspection orders to obtain compliance with codes and regulations; carry out unscheduled inspections in response to fire safety complaints
- Educate/liaise with property owners or operators on safe operating procedures and methods in eliminating fire hazards
- Assist FESTI with the instructional delivery of selected Fire Prevention and Public Education curriculums
- Conduct the investigation of fires to determine cause and origin; assist law enforcement in gathering and presenting evidence in suspected incendiary fires

**Qualifications**:

- The minimum education required is a Fire Protection Engineering Technology diploma, technical school training including or supplemented by related work experience - or will possess an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience to indicate fully the ability to cover all aspects of this position. Preference will be given to those with a Post-Secondary Education or Technical school diploma/certificate
- NFPA Fire Inspector 1031 Level 1, IFSAC / Pro-Board accredited certification or acceptable Ontario Fire Marshal certifications.
- NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level 1 IFSAC / Pro-Board accredited certification or acceptable Ontario Fire Marshal certifications
- NFPA 921, CFEI must be obtained within 12 months of employment start date
- Provide a Certificate of Standard First Aid and level “C” or “BLS for HCP” CP
- Valid Ontario class “G” driver license
- Able to obtain “D/A” Airside Vehicle Operators License (AVOP) license
- Able to obtain and retain a Transportation Security Clearance
- A bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Fire Protection, Fire Engineering, or related field would be a definite asset
- 2-3 years of experience as a fire prevention officer or equivalent would be an asset

**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**:

- Knowledge of codes, acts and related regulations governing the work
- A thorough knowledge of building code, fire code, NFPA standards, industrial processes, flammable and combustible liquids, fire protection equipment, and emergency systems in high rise buildings
- Ability to meet and deal effectively with a variety of contacts to stimulate interest and cooperation in fire prevention and safety programs through airport community presentations, demonstrations, and related activities
- He/she must have the ability to: read and interpret building plans and specifications; prepare detailed technical reports and maintain a variety of records
- Proficient in conducting fire prevention and inspections
- Knowledge and understanding of fire investigation methods and procedures
- Proficient in chairing meetings, producing agendas and minutes
- Ability to multitask, exercise good judgment and be adaptable to a changing environment
- Effective in leading and influencing people
