**JOB PURPOSE**:
The Outreach Worker provides support, education and help ensure the safety of individuals who are found in precarious positions in the downtown core. The Outreach Worker will to deliver harm reduction supplies, education and support on safer drug use, prevention of drug poisoning and take home naloxone distribution, sexual health and provide referrals to other health & social services. The team will respond to drug poisonings as necessary. Outreach will occur on foot, in house and by vehicle. There will be training to staff.
**KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Seeks out opportunities to provide peer-to-peer counselling, treatment options and referrals.
- Assists with system navigation and
- going with” people to appointments if needed
- Provides overdose prevention education, encourages individuals to partake in community based naloxone training, completes THN training and distributes kits as required.
- Provides education and counselling on safer substance use, sexual health and other high-risk behaviors.
- Works with program nursing staff to address immediate health needs
- Ensure that COVID-19 infection control standards are maintained
- Maintains stats through a digital system
- Performs other related duties, as required
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education**:
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
**Skills, Abilities and Attitudes**:
- Able to work non-judgmentally with people who may be using substances within a Harm Reduction framework
- Outgoing personality
- Demonstrate interpersonal and organizational skills
- Ability to work in an Indigenous cultural context
- Familiarity with local community resources (e.g. substance use, social services, justice)
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team setting and in partnership with other organizations, with a solutions orientation
- Flexibility, creativity, enthusiasm and non-judgmental attitude
- Self-directed
- Ability to be politically astute and non-confrontational
- A driver’s license is a definite asset
**Experience**:
- Lived experience of marginalization, substance use, and/or discrimination is preferred
- Experience working with marginalized communities is an asset
