Join the Welcome Home family and be a friend to a newly housed individual As a volunteer, you and another volunteer partner will be matched with an individual who has left homelessness, and is now struggling with social isolation and loneliness in their new home. You will help them to build connection and resilience through community outings, weekly conversations, and attending fun social events. Some of the individuals in Welcome Home have experienced trauma, and may struggle with mental illnesses and/or addictions. They need friends with a mature, caring and non-judgmental attitude to help them make a fresh start in their new community.
Currently we are looking for volunteers who live in/near the following communities/ areas of the city:
- Central Edmonton (McCauley) - 2 volunteers
- Central Edmonton South (Bonnie Doon) - 1 volunteer
- Near the University - 2 volunteers
- Near 118 Avenue NE - 3 volunteers
- South Edmonton - 2 volunteers
- North Edmonton - 3 volunteers
What you can expect to do:
- Develop a positive, supportive relationship with matched participant(s)
- Attend mandatory Welcome Home Program training sessions
- Meet with match participants 2-4 times per month and connect weekly by phone for a minimum of 6 months
Desired Skills/Abilities:
- Good interpersonal and relationship building skills
- Effective communication and listening skills
- Reliable and trustworthy
- Respectful of people from diverse cultures, economic and educational backgrounds, sexual orientations, and life circumstances
- Ability to maintain and model healthy, appropriate personal boundaries
- Flexible schedule
- Knowledge of/experience with Indigenous traditions & cultures would be an asset
As a Welcome Home Volunteer, you will have the opportunity to foster a relationship that will be mutually enriching and make a positive impact on the life of someone who previously experienced homelessness. You will increase your knowledge regarding the impact of mental health on the homeless population in Edmonton. You will also be part of a large and diverse group of volunteers, and have many opportunities to meet new people and enhance your own social and relationship building skills Reference letters are available upon request after 25 hours of service.
